Yeah, I'm mostly saying that they seem to have some gartery thing going.  I noticed only when I was looking at some album-art where Eren is in a very female-gazey pose, and I was wondering if something was going on there.
The garter seems to be there to hold their boots up.  Could be vaguely fanservicy, although if he wanted that you'd think he'd just expose flesh or something.

Thank you for your input Vector, I've been wondering about those fabled flame wars for a while now.

Now since people are talking about it, I prefer dubs mostly. I agree that some of the older ones are pretty poor, but I tend towards English voice acting as a matter of practicality. If my attention is brought elsewhere while watching a subbed anime (or whatever), I run the risk of missing potentially important dialog because I can't read the translation. Whereas if everyone is speaking my native language, I can at least keep listening in even if I have to turn away from the screen. I'm not rabidly anti-sub by any means, its just not my preference if a dub is available.

Interestingly, I'm the exact opposite. I tend to find things much easier to process in subtitles, especially with the bombastic style that is extremely common in English anime voice acting (Vash the Stampede, for example is not easy for me to understand sometimes). Of course, I also tend to keep the sound on things relatively low unless I'm using headphones out of courtesy to other people in the house and/or neighbors, so that makes things even more indistinct. It helps that I can read pretty much as fast as I can hear.

I process things...about the same either way, but I prefer subtitles, because especially on a computer, I am tempted to switch out tabs or only  half-watch when it's a dub. I grew up with dubs (got it from my dad, and he can't read subtitles due to some form of dyslexia or something like that), but switched to subs at some point because that's where all the cool new stuff was, and stuck with those. There are certain shows that do have terrible-sounding dubs (I'm looking at you, Lucky Star!), but I think that a lot of people who say that all dubs are terrible are crazy, there are some really good ones out there. But yeah, it's just a matter of preference, really. There are some shows that I do watch dubs in, either for nostalgia sake with childhood-anime, or because I like the dub of that particular show a lot ("Who the hell do you think I am?" -- Kamina).

When it comes to dubs vs subs, I'm pretty indifferent, i usually just go with whatever the default is just so i have to click less. I also seem to be tone deaf or something when it comes to voice acting, I don't really notice bad voice acting unless they are trying to be bad.

I don't care very much but i guess i lean somewhat towards dubs. But i stick to whatever was the first i heard, sub or dub.

I tend to prefer subs, for a number of reasons. I process better that way, it allows the subbers to include little notes on cultural in-jokes and puns that normally wouldn't survive translation (either in dubs or official licensed subs), and because so many dubs tend towards hammy/low-quality VAing. I like having the words match the lip flaps. With that said, there are some dubs that were good enough that I view them interchangeably with the sub (or even, in the case of Cowboy Bebop, in the place of it). Code Geass is a great example of a show where both sets of VAs were at least competent, with some gems on each side.

Eeh, there's something to be said for subtlety in fanservice. Something that's both plausible in its own right and a turn-on, all while not being the sort of mindless simplicity that makes up a good chunk of fanservice? That sounds like a pretty good way to handle it, at least to me. Though I will say that it becomes much more obvious in fan art/distance shots where the stocking bodysuit things look remarkably close to flesh-tone, at least for the lighter-skinned characters.

I'll listen to dubs every chance I get, but only if they're stellar. Otherwise I'm watching in subs, which is most of the time. There's certain things that I can't watch with subs because I'm so attached to the character, like Trigun (Vash is just the fucking best) and vanilla FMA, but Brotherhood I watch in subs because Al's voice sounds funny, and Cowboy Bebop will always be dubbed in my head and heart.

I did a third watch through of Trigun, and while overly sappy at times, it's still an extremely interesting anime.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm not sharing this because I am trying to turn anyone on, I'm just saying I think this piece of official material would have been posed differently if there wasn't something going on there.

I think the important thing with subs is to find a good subtitle track in the first place. The reason I said "fuck fansubs" in my last post is because I was used to having the german subtitled in the dub version of Hellsing and whoever did it didn't know that you can just out a black border on white text and it will be visible in 99% of situations. Also, "miau is german for meow" thank you for that interesting detail subtitle guy.

That's just one promotional image though, the author may not even have been involved in making it.  I think there'd be more evidence in the actual manga if the author was going for some kind of bondage subtext.

I kindof prefer subs in most cases because I get this vague sense of disquiet when hearing American accents on characters who aren't American (or from some fantasy universe).  Also there are some cases where individual character voices would pull me over to subs (eg Lelouch in CG).

I wonder if there was a way we could collect all of the Anime titles from the 300 (50 post spread) pages of discussion we have here, and throw it all into a genre-divided list from best to worst.

I don't know if there ever has been a mass list which has been mass-voted upon.
Probably because of the time and effort involved.

It would be a bit tough, since for example I don't watch every anime and manga these people watch (mostly because I don't take recommendations from them... Since they tend to be gore or depressing)

As well quite a few I feel deserve their own genre.

For example I consider "Hobby" anime to be on their own and "Card game" animes also to be in a different pile. Yet Bayblade wouldn't go in either of those. So I'd split Hobby into Action Hobby, Hobby, and Card Game.

But who here other then me even watched a good chunk of those?

Heck when I saw the parody of this genre in Hayate Combat Butler I embarrassingly knew all the references... Including the Bike anime.

I'm not trying to say there's a subtext like that it's somehow meaningful, I'm just saying that it's a weird choice of uniform and I wonder if it was at all determined by a costuming decision rather than pure practicality.  You know, what real-world looks the author was considering--I read plenty of authors saying "I drew up a lot of practical things and then picked the one that looked coolest and most iconic."  Here, "coolest and most iconic" includes a lot of belts, as is appropriate to anyone who grew up with Final Fantasy going on in the background.  It's kind of like a girl having cat ears.  That doesn't mean she's part of some sort of nekomimi porn, or even that they'll fall into nekomimi stereotypes, but it's interesting to see which sorts of "significant features" authors add to their characters.  Go Nagai sideburns, or blue hair, or arare-megane, or anything else.

And, in this case, we have an entire cast done up in a uniform with suspenders and garter belts?  Interesting choice.  I wonder if it was an intentional selling point, because I know that plenty of people like those, or if it really is a zero-fanservice series with no consideration whatsoever of creating an "iconic character," as has been so important in recent shonen titles.

Anyway, I'm not asking for an answer or something, just musing.

I do find it hilarious how in all the artworks showing Mikasa in anything revealing she's depicted with the physique you would expect from someone of her strength and ability.

I also love that the most popular character has the ugliest, and least-anime haircut by far.
