Well, that's better than still being on Namek.  Invasions take preparation, after all.

That sounds quite acceptable. I've been bemused on more than one occasion by series that make large-scale political and military developments happen in minutes or hours in-verse. Granted, I understand the desire to keep the mayfly attention span people awake, but still.

Ehhh, people can work pretty fast when the plot needs it.

That statement reminds me of Fineas and Ferb when they carved an entire mountain in MAYBE an hour using Pick axes. While not an anime, lets just say the "Lets rebuild our entire army over night" tends to happen a lot... especially in Gundam shows where entire fleets are constantly destroyed.

Gundam doesn't count. Everyone knows they keep massive armies of faceless clones and mothballed military hardware ready for the named characters to slaughter.  :P

I'm preparing to start watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but before I do: is there any reason why 110 episodes of space opera isn't going to be a good thing?
Very slow pacing at times. To quote tvtropes, "It's possible to watch an episode where the heroes prepare for an invasion, skip ahead three episodes, and find the heroes still preparing for that same invasion."

And then, you have the invasion/fleet action going for several episodes :P

Besides, it's better to watch the preparations - lots of background action and spying and politics there too, so you actually know why the invasion.

Well, that could be good or bad. If it's like FMA:Brotherhood, where they're executing several military maneuvers in a single day one after another, that's fine. If it's like DBZ, where a single fight between a couple of people goes on for episodes upon episodes, it can be a bit tiring.

I don't recall a space fleet engagement longer than 3 or 4 episodes; those are the ones between Yang and Reinhard in 2nd season.

Most take 2 (full episode + few minutes of next for conclusion), or a full one episode.

As long as they can pause in the middle of fights to have long conversations it's fine with me.

Ah, I rather liked that one, though it had its issues.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Let's look at what most of the cast of Baccano! are composed of shall we?:

Thieves, bootleggers, drug dealers, explosive expert, psychos, mafia/camorrista, crime lords, terrorists, hitmen/assassins, alchemists, immortals, torture technician, mexican samurai, homunculi enforcers...mmm, missing more I think.
