Though let me see... dodging a bullet would be hard because simply speaking it can often move faster then the sound it makes so you would want to use a light when the bullet is fired.

Now the question is your reaction speed. Now if you have a reaction speed that allows you to see a light and get out of the way in a single second then 500 meters away is a good bet for most pistol rounds (1000 meters if you are dealing with a rifle). If you want a safer bet then double these ranged as that will give you two seconds to get out of the way.

I don't know how to express it.  But I don't want Neonivek pulling an article out (not that he would) where a person had gills for the majority of his life or something.
Also any kind of extremely early 'gills' you may have are denied if that wasn't obvious.
