Hmm, friend insists that an FPS of all anime characters that is NOT a mod exists somewhere, but they don't know where to find it and it's killing them. Apparently it has a Konata player, too, so now I wanna find it too.

Anyways, this is what FLCL is worth watching for:

I'll quote another old one that was bugging me.

Transformers doesn't count as an anime, of course, because what most people don't realise is that it was an entirely American production simply based on a Japanese toy line.

(bolded words my emphasis)

Except that it was also 100% animated in Japan as well (and had japanese Dubs made locally), look at the American credits for Transformers G1, no animation staff are credited whatsoever, just American storyboarders and sound people. There are even additional Japanese-only seasons with the G1 characters, 100% made by the Japanese studios after it left the air in America.

Dasleah reversed history here. At the time VERY few of the western kids knew that Transformers had any Japanese connection, or what 'anime' was (the word was barely even in use in the west, people I knew called Japenese animation "manga" in the 1990's), or about Japanese animation in general, so it was never considered 'anime' to us who grew up with it. It was only much later mainly via the internet people came to know of the origins of the series.

so who are these 'most people' who thought wrongly that Transformers was Japanese? Certainly not the people who grew up with the show.

*cough*

I think I am.
Think I looked through the first couple pages instead of the last.

Hahah, I didn't notice that either.  :-[

After playing Sengoku Rance, I really learnt to hate the protagonist, he's a rapist who rapantly slaughters people, and in general just a really horrible person. That doesn't stop a quarter of the girls he meets thinking the world of him because apparently these are traits that can be overlooked?
Rance really isn't that bad a person. He's only a rapist to people he's beaten in open combat (or figures closely attached to such), and he's even pretty cool about people who used to be trying to kill him but aren't anymore. He's also not any more warlike or brutal than most other people, from what I've seen, and he's actually a personally better person than a lot of them.

He's not a saint, pacifist, or visionary, but he's at least on par with everyone else who isn't one of those either.

Eugh. Directed by the director of Cowboy Bebop, about high school jazz.

My feelings are... mixed.

Well that's interesting. Sort of an earlier, more anime-wards example of the Avatar dilemma, I guess.

It can be melodramatic but the music is so awesome.
And the characters aren't half bad.

EDIT:
Holy crap chapter 5 of Higanbana was nuts.  I think it's my favorite so far.

Oh this is fun.  You mean the tv series from the start?  If you finish and are still interested (besides the movie stuff) the manga adaption is really really good and adds a lot more I think.  I shouldn't say anything else...

Okay so the kid just saw a giant robot face. I've seen Gurren Lagann. I know exactly where this is going.

Anyone know where I can watch the rest of the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood dub, preferably for free (or at least as cheaply as possible)? I watched the first 39 episodes via Netflix 30-day trial, but the rest isn't there.

Ah, it's on hulu? Great, thanks!

E: Oh, the dub is only for 4 episodes... Oh well, I guess I can live with a sub.

I wasn't aware it was possible to make something opposite of Gurren Lagann, but Eva manages in pretty much every way.

Well, Eva IS the deconstruction of cheesy 80s mecha anime. Gurren Lagann is the reconstruction.

These things go full circle.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

But the only way I can think of for it to be more opposite would be if the robots were very small.

If I may be a huge nerd for a moment... (And if you're not interested in "origins of gurren lagaan" then feel free to skip this, that's pretty much all it is)

Gurren lagaan is partially a huge deconstruction of super robot shows from the 70's and 80's, yes. I honestly think it pulled it off a lot better then most of them, but we won't get into that.

(very minor spoilers but I figured I'd spoil em anyway)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So basically what I'm saying is if you want more gurren lagaan from your giant robots, check out getter robo. It's from the 70's so the animation is't nearly as good, and the art is in a very different style, but it has the same "feel" about it. And I think subs are out? I wanna say they're out for at least a couple of the series. I never went digging for them so I can't be sure. Don't think it's on hulu unfortunately, as it was never officially released in the US.

Anyway, carry on. And as a side note, for some reason I really love the fact that EVA robots have to be plugged in, it's a neat twist on the genre.

Having watched Super Robot Shows from the 70s and 80s I deny this assessment.

It seems more like a deconstruction of Shonen in general with giant robots thrown in.
