Last Exile and Eureka 7 spring to mind as animes with competent females as non-lead characters. Depending on how far you want to stretch the definition of 'lead', Baccano and Cowboy Bebop could fit as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a genre thing, really. That sounds like something that could be more prevalent in shonen, of all things. Note that I'm pulling this completely out of my ass as I don't watch that stuff too often.

It's basically like saying: "What could possibly go wrong?", "You and what army?", "Nothing could stop us now!" and "How could this get any worse?" Fate is a whimsical goddess...as is Lady Luck.

Just read Shingeki no Kyojin (Advancing Giants). It went from "seemed silly" to "pretty f%&%^*D up"...artwork is ok and all. It amused me enough...

> QUESTION: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha has always been in my "I should check it out" list to watch...is it ok/better to go directly and watch the movie versions instead without missing much at all? Seems it could save time and just jump on whatever seasons is next after it. So to those who've seen it, recommended viewing order is.....?

I haven't seen the film, but I've watched all seasons.

As a completionist I'd like to say "watch it all", but I can't. The first season is... It has a couple of good parts, but most of the time it's not why people love the show. Also it has a lot more of the "hey let's look at the naked little girl!" than the later seasons, less cool fights and more monster-of-the-week episodes. The second season, aka. the awesomesauce season, is only 12 episodes and for many (not all, mind you) the best of the three so I really urge you to watch at least that. The third season, Strikers, is decent follow-up to second season but at 24 episodes I think they stretched it a bit too far. There's just not enough good writing to fill all that. Still, if after 2nd season you feel like some more Nanoha, go for it.

All that I remember about the difference between the movie and the first season is that the movie makes Nanoha's big thick pink thing much bigger than it was in the TV series. I haven't actually seen the movie, mind you, this is just what I remember from the threads on /m/.

Ugh.

Trying to finally read Naruto, so that's going okay...

..except I do not need twenty pages of shitty recolors in front of every chapter. Every. Chapter. I could swear a lot of these are duplicates too, to say nothing of how often it's the exact same page done by different people or in different styles.

Believe so, yeah. It's persisted across multiple groups, though, so it's not just the one.

Blah.

I just gave somebody The Anime Talk. I always love doing that- explaining to somebody that yes, Pokémon is basically crap and no, anime is not a monolithic genre, and most people don't have very good taste, and that LoGH and Evangelion are as fantastic as anything the West has ever produced.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

The first season is great of Pokemon, my nostalgia tells me so.

most people don't have very good taste
You sure you understand the concept of taste? :P

Most people don't share your taste, maybe. Most people have unsophisticated taste, maybe. But there's no "good" or "bad" taste. It's a word that means subjectivity.
