The common pitfall I see people fall into when writing disabled people (and other minorities, for that matter) is they feel they need to "make up" for the character trait. So a kid in a wheelchair will probably be the best mathematician in the room, or something like that. It's fine that they're a great mathematician in addition to being in a wheelchair, but not because they're in a wheelchair. The former is a regular ol' character, the latter treats the disability like a bad thing that needs to be balanced out so the audience likes them

Which is funny because if the Kid really tried hard he can probably use his wheelchair faster then everyone else can walk.

As for Toph the reason he bending ability is more akin to "Magically undisabled" and not "found a way around it" is simply because as described there would be a severe disadvantage to it (Afterall it is a tremor sense). The total amount of times Toph's version of sight hasn't helped her was once when she was going through the sand.

Then again I have to remember that when you are blind you are forced to build up other senses to the extent you can seem magically unblind. Blind martial artists who could kick your butt exist. Blind Bikers exist. I remember a scene in the Helen Keller movie where she was able to tell who you were by either the vibrations you create while walking on the wooden floors or by the taste of your spit.

moaning because the female characters don't suck.

Watch anime. Women suck by default unless they are the main character or part of a female focused anime. Plus even if you get a good competent woman in anime, chances are they will devolve to useless before it is through. (I will never forgive Anime for what they did to Princess Snow)

Repeating yourself powers....ACTIVATE

EDIT:
Comprehensible list:

Chaoswizkid
Kallen - Code Geass
Evangeline - Mahou Sensei Negima
a lot of people in Tenjo Tenge
a lot of people in Rosario + Vampire

ToonyMan
Olivier Armstrong - Fullmetal Alchemist
Erza - Fairy Tail

(I'll add pretty much any female Type-Moon character too)

Mindmaker
Seras Victoria - Hellsing Ultimate

And everything that's worth missing, seriously it's not an issue.

Yes those two examples entirely negate what I said... Ohh wait no they don't. (Also Erza is getting pretty close to being continuously negated in Fairy Tale)

...Two examples?

EDIT:
(Adding Type-Moon characters alone is like at least a dozen more examples)

(And if I included 07th Expansion or Dangan Ronpa...hohohohoh

hohohoh)

Better than zero examples, especially when you're arguing about a universal default.

I know but it still helps that those are the "Exceptions" rather then the examples that break the rules.

Also I wanted to cancel that, and I thought it didn't go through, but I guess it did actually post.

Though I am impressed people didn't start posting animes that focus on female characters or had a female lead. Like Nagima 1000, Sailormoon, or Digikarat.

And even in my example of Marchen Awakens Romance, Dorothy survives the Women-suck rule of anime (though I suspect it is because she is the sex appeal of the show... She REALLY doesn't get out of the show with dignity. Still though Snow's removal from the anime feels soo mcuh like the Anime Women Default.).

Also it isn't like even I don't have exceptions to the rule. Live-On and Keichi both had very competent female characters who weren't thrown aside (ignoring that the main female character was usurped by the male lead...). I also have animes that follow this formula very closely such as Master Cooking Boy where there are only two competent female chefs and one is dead and the other never cooks, maybe three but she put drugs in their food for no real reason other then for SOME reason she thought chefs were meant to put cocaine in food.

I call it the anime Women default rather then the Anime universal rule on women.

What about Akane from Ranma 1/2 (or heck any of the female characters.), or Dragonball? ChiChi, Bulma, Android 17, ect ect. Dragonball had lots of strong female characters.

How many examples are needed for your position to be proven false?

Dragonball? ChiChi, Bulma, Android 17

You mean Chichi the woman who was on par or even stronger then Goku who was put down soo badly she became useless? Or Android 17 who was also thrown into the pile of incompetents before even the Cell Saga was complete?

Sorry but Dragonball is the example I use to prove the point.

Female focused anime... oddly enough... and it is also an anime with a female lead (1.5 female leads)

It isn't about a woman being strong. Anyone in an anime can be strong. It is about whether or not they remain competent within the crux of the anime itself. My biggest complaint about anime and women isn't the lack of competent women altogether, it is that the sheer number of times they will introduce a strong competent woman who is thrown under the males is what bugs me.

There is either no competent women or women do not remain competent that is the anime woman default.

Anyhow I guess this isn't worth discussing anymore. Since conversations only work when the people talking know what you are talking about.

Um, ChiChi when she was reintroduce during the last bit of Dragonball was quite the challenge to Goku, who was pretty confused about why she was mad, but he had to put in effort to defeat her.

ChiChi went on to train Goten.

Android 17 wasnt knocked down into incompetence. I dont get where you're getting that. Are you referring to fact that she doesnt fight Buu? (There might be something in GT, I havent really watched GT.)

Ranma 1/2 is focused on Ranma, Ryoga and Akane. It is a harem anime, but the plethora of girls of the show arent the driving force of the show. Though there are several episodes were they have been.

Akane was shown to always be a strong character and competent.

What about the Insurance Girls from Trigun? How do they grow incompetent?

No dang it... Watch the show before you say that. His major difficulty was knocking her out without hurting her. None of her attacks worked.

"There might be something in GT"

In GT she reveals to Goku how Super 17 (since it is Android 18 you were refering to) works. Allowing him to win. Her blasts were just to show him but she ultimately couldn't do anything to help beyond that.

"Akane was shown to always be a strong character and competent"

Yes, female lead.

It is a problem in not just anime but most fiction in general, though there are a fair amount of exceptions to the rule. It could stem from the fact that as far as I know most anime writers are male, and men often write male characters better than they can with female ones and vice-versa with female writers.

Then Rewatch that fight. It was the most disapointing thing I seen. Especially since I actually liked the character and in the games she is a much tougher opponent (HOLY DANG in one of the games she is tough... Mind you, you couldn't lose that fight as she just forces you to marry her if you lose... or you stupidly agree to marry her if you win... but wow her game version was awsome (she even dodged energy attacks).
