Ok maybe you can answer this

Why are the Japanese so easily intimidated?

I am watching Prince of Tennis and people are wetting their pants because one guy can play tennis really well.
It's not really cultural. Its bad writing. It's been a bit since I've read/looked up stuff for Prince of Tennis, but it's sport anime, shonen.

So you have this problem. You have a character who is doing X, and his performance at X is outstanding/extraordinary/beyond-normal-human-limits.

How do you show/tell this?

That question is very hard to answer. Now, how, sadly, a lot of Shonen anime/magna decide to answer this question, is by telling, instead of showing. And in all form of writing, the better (and generally harder) option is to show over tell.

So they convey to the audience that character is doing X super-special-awesome by giving you the reaction to bystanders, telling us how we should be perceiving the performance of X.

Hence, why a lot of bystanders are just overly excitable.

I'm currently writing a shonen comic, and the excitable bystander is a trope that I've sworn to completely ignore (unless I can satirize it, or advert it). I've also sown to completely ignore time compression training.

And this has proven very difficult to show difference in abilities between characters, but I've come up with a few, hopefully visually dynamic, answers to the question.

Part of my answer, is through the use of mach cones. The higher deflection of the mach cone, the faster & harder hitting the character is.
The other use, is using environmental clue to show when the characters have enter shonen speed. Major inspiration for that comes from Jet Li's movie, The One. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=O4oi9i7Hy10#t=277s

There they show the electrical spittle happening at normal speed, then the two Li's enter shonen speed and the sparks slow down. Showing us, they're moving at shonen speed.

Now contrast that with telling us, they would have used the black guy there, reacting to the two characters at shonen speed saying something like, "Crap, I can even see them move. They're one intermixed blur! Its unreal!"

I watched the first episode of Nichijou yesterday with my friend. Damn, it's a really funny series.

Also, I totally think that a DF comedy comic/manga would be hilarious. It'd be like Nichijou. Except with more blood, exploding cats, and HFS.

If only I could draw.

Ohhh if that was the problem I'd be fine. afterall it is a Tennis anime of course they are impressed if someone at least does a proper serve.

But that isn't always the case. I've seen them freek out because someone was walking... normally. When they arn't a scary person.

Prince of Tennis may very well be the WORST anime for this ever... and I still have like 170 episodes to go.

They might as well rename the Anime "Prince of Wetting your pants" because that seems to substitute more episodes. For example in just this episode someone peed their pants in terror because a nice girl they didn't mind in any other episode said hello. Note that there is no romance involved on his end and he is unaware of the other end.

Just watch the Live Action Musical, where all the crying and intimidation is replaced by charmingly bad singing and arm flailing.

meh, what about the fact that in every single anime two drops of rain make the characters grab life-threatening colds of 39+ degrees? What are they made of, cotton-candy?
Or how if they don't sleep in a *futon* the next morning they are nearly dead because of a cold? What is it, -90 Degrees in the night in japan?
Really, what is it with japanese and *colds*?

“Well,” he said. “We’re in the Forgotten hunting grounds I take it. Your screams just woke them up early. Congratulations, Lyara.”
“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.
“There, I did something. I clapped. I like clapping,” he said. -The Investigator And The Case Of The Missing Brain.

Getting cold and wet making you sick is something of an urban legend anyway. It has been known to lower the effectiveness of your immune system, but the only reason people think that getting wet and cold makes you sick is because your body will try to insulate you by filling your airways with mucus, which is the same thing that happens when you have an infection in the airways.

Finished chapter 7 of Chaos;Head.  This is getting pretty good.  Although I'm starting to hit technical issues but also finding means to bypass them so it's all good.  (The issue was I can't load any saves from chapter 7, I just got to chapter 8 and loading saves works again, very odd.)
There's also one point in the game depending on what I do I can reliably have the game kick me back to the main menu screen, very strange.
About 19 hours of play-time?

EDIT:
Now that I think about, maybe I was getting kicked back due to a bad ending?  They give no warning of it though...

EDITX2:
Finished Isoroku's route in Sengoku Rance.  That was good.  Having a score besides 0 is nice, I think I got 39 points.  Anyway time to bump the difficulty up again and aim for something new!  I can actually afford bonus newgame+ stuff now too.  Like an extra action fan for only 10 points.
Spoiler: thoughts (click to show/hide)

The Special event list makes me shudder because it reminds me of Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the hoops you often had to jump through to get the bonuses.

What is terrible is I once got the "All the items" achievement but because of how the game saved it didn't count any of it.

Note the things are: All items, All Skills (I got that once too, they didn't count it), and worst of all ALL ENDINGS! (There are several endings and each can take hours to get of careful calculation)

Yep there are animes that you can watch legally for free off of Youtube. Even some movies (some movie companies have put their old black and white films up on youtube.)

I think Funimation has a few shows they show on Youtube that you cannot even see on TV.
