I don't think they count as being considered anything.

They're both Japanese cartoons.
In fact two of my favorite Japanese cartoons.

Really? I can't imagine them being much different in Japanese than in English, and at least Shin-chan is just super crude; I forget a lot about Super Milk Chan, so it's either crude or it's just... meh.

So what exactly counts as anime / how do you define it?

if they = Japanese cartoons, and Japanese cartoons = anime,
they should = anime ?

It's also a style sort of thing. Japanese cartoons + certain style = anime. It's sort of like how American comics have a much different art style than, for example, Family Guy. This does get sort of confusing though, because the show Teen Titans has an anime style, but isn't Japanese; same with Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The thing is though that Shirley matters to Lelouch. Shirley helps with showing that Lelouch is still a high school student doing all of these things, and that his actions, and the actions of others around him, have consequences. It's less of "Mess with Shirley" than it is "Mess with Lelouch by Messing with Shirley." At least that's how I see it.

Similarly, watching the show the first time through, this was the point that I predicted that Lelouch would fail in his schemes, and he'd eventually lose everything. This isn't a spoiler, this was just my prediction, just to clarify. Seeing Lelouch get depressed over Shirley is what convinced me that Lelouch is just too emotional to be an evil mastermind. His feelings get in the way, and he on MANY occasions makes very stupid choices because of it, that he only escapes through sheer luck.

Just my opinion.

I know there's something of an expected format/style for anime, but I tend to lump Japanese animations like Fullmetal Alchemist, Shin Chan, and even Inspector Gadget into the same category. I take a pretty broad perspective on it though, since the word means "Animation"; I mentally group the aforementioned Animes with things like Les Triplettes de Belleville, and other animations that treat themselves as a serious storytelling medium.

I just find both of them incredibly compelling. The first because of its poetic quality rather than its storytelling aspects. The second one because
it's just...I don't know, it's just incredibly well put together, not just good "for an anime" or whatever someone might say, but for movies in general.
Just...gettin' that out there.

Started reading Liar Game.
Read up to the end of round 1, I'm liking it a lot so far. It's pretty intense.

Not too much of an anime fan, but I still watch SOME of it. Anyone here heard of 5 centimeters per second, or The girl who leapt through time?
I just find both of them incredibly compelling. The first because of its poetic quality rather than its storytelling aspects. The second one because
it's just...I don't know, it's just incredibly well put together, not just good "for an anime" or whatever someone might say, but for movies in general.
Just...gettin' that out there.

Never seen that first one, but I agree that The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is pretty above-average.

I'm trying to figure out the point of the New Hunter X Hunter anime.  It seems to almost exactly follow the story of the first one, but with a bit less detail.  Are they going to do this through the whole thing, or is the story going to branch out in another direction like the Full Metal Alchemist one did?

I think they are going to follow HxH farther then the other series did up to where its current. After that though, I got no idea.

Also, the HxH manga is awesome right now, Pariston is such a troll.

Yeah, every once in a while the author takes like 6 month hiatuses, it's REALLY annoying, but its still going strong other then that.

I started reading Liar Game last night too, pretty interesting if you like stuff with psychological trickery. (I'm at the beginning of the second round.)
