She's actually a character from part 3 in the manga.

OOPS SPOILERS

I was refering to how women just tend to become useless in Animes where they arn't the main character.

Fairy Tale (or Tail... whatever) I just know is going to apply this eventually... and it annoys me. Though only because so far the series is quite good at highlighting why each character is awsome in their own right... even the goofy and dufusy ones.

Mahou. Sensei. Negima. All of the girls, all of the powers. If they are all main characters, then there are 50+ of them. (Note: Manga)

Soul Eater has gone pretty far against this as well (Medusa, Arachne, Chrona). (Note: Manga)

Slayers (Luna, LoN (arguably a chick))

Code Geass (Kallen)

Darker than Black (Amber)

Rosario + Vampire (Not sure if this will stay applicable due to the new arcs in the manga, just need to see where it goes)

Or do you mean something else?

I was answering Josh and Leafsnail.  I should have put quotes hehe.

Yeah, I kind of like series that don't really have a main character.  Sure there are male and females leads and what not but they're just part of the story.  Fate/zero was cool because Urobuchi focuses on pretty much every character to their deaths (usually).  I guess animated shows have a harder time doing that since there's so much less time but it can be done.  Hmmm.

That lady in Kaiji isn't very important right now so it's not really a big deal she's not doing anything.  There's plenty of badass plot women.  I can think of like 12 just from the Nasu-verse (AOZAKI/SHIKI/SABER) or like, pretty much most series I can think of like that.

Ok I am going to eliminate animes where the main characters ARE women (or a woman). Which is what I meant by "Arn't the main character".

Essentially removing over half your list (In Slayers Lina is the main character, Negima has two female leads and one male lead, Mahou is all female leads, and Sensei has a female lead).

Though I guess I should limit my scope a bit since Naruto does the exact same thing and Sakura was one of the main characters for a bit until she sort of became a tag along whos Chakra control and intelligence greater then anyone else somehow made her more useless (I just LOVE the filler episode where a random character actually has to save Sakura from her own ineptitude... in an area SHE is the expert in). So limiting it may be warented.

Heck Yakkate Japan!!! even makes fun of it with the Female lead complaining that in all honesty she SHOULD be the main character yet she has never actually done anything for the entire show (I used to think the show subverted it with one AWSOME female character who used science for great cooking... nope it was just a male with medium flowing purple hair, lush lips, and a female voice).
-What is interesting is it is true. She actually has more investment into the series and storywise is supposed to have as much skill and knowledge as the other main characters including a specialty in French baking. She is thrown to the wayside.

Ultimately it seems like... if a show doesn't have a female focus they will probably die, become useless, or sort of phase out.

"There's plenty of badass plot women"

Hey I am not going to argue there arn't badass plot women. Heck almost every series I watched had one. The real measure is if they stay that way (sometimes they get a buff, but it never lasts). It is almost like being a woman is somehow a gimic and is only there to meet some sort of quota and move on.

Side characters tend to be fairly useless or unimportant regardless of gender. If you're not counting female leads, you're basically just looking at random temporary hardasses and villains.

Main character and leads are sort of different things.

For example Lucile and that Luffy looking guy in Fairytale are the leads (though Lucy was never amazing, but I am fine with that). While the Red Headed Armor wearing woman is a main character and so far has continued to be awsome and relevant last I checked.

I just wanted to exclude animes with a strong female focus (Near all female cast or over half the main characters are female). Which tend to be the exception as a rule of thumb anyhow but for obvious reasons. Sans why I said I should limit my scope a bit. You can usually pick out animes with strong female focus either by the amount of woman in general or by who the leads are.

There are also odd situations where this happens to one character but not to another. In Marchen Awakens Romance Dorothy is still relevant and kicking butt until the end in the most unfortunate fanservice I ever seen... while Princess Snow who at one time was one of the main characters gets downgraded quite badly as she "is a girl and cannot fight".

I would consider Erza a main character.  That four man squad is pretty set.

I don't know. Lucy and Luffyman (DANG I wish I could remember names) seem to be the only two constant characters. Erza has been left out of the party quite a few times.

Wait... why am I arguing... we both have said she is a main character O_o. I just said she wasn't the lead.

I actually wonder if we are meant to like Natsu or if he is actually meant to come into his own over time.

Given that he sort of lacks almost any sort of heroic qualities beyond the ability to beat up characters who arn't smart enough to beat him.

Well Nasu clearly wanted to have female protagonists from the start (Shiki was female in Kara no Kyoukai which predates Tsukihime, FSN was gonna be an otome game, new series will have a female protagonist etc) but probably decided it wouldn't sell.
