The Sayonara Sensei manga is still on-going too!  I would read it if it wasn't 200+ chapters long.

Well, part of the problem is that main characters have to succeed at everything, which means that any flaws they might have pretty much by defenition have to be overcome, irrelevant in the first place, or rare enough that they only run into it for comedic/dramatic effect. This can be done better or worse, obviously, but at the end of the day you're still looking at something alarmingly close to either "Main character is a god" or "Main character is a cripple who relies totally on others to perform certain tasks."

Of course, in theory this ought to be easier to avert with team-heavy works, since the "main" character doesn't necessarily have to accomplish/defeat everything by himself, but I can't think of any examples.

That said, I'd just avoid loser/average main characters to begin with, since the whole "but wait they're really awesome at least sometimes!" thing is either the whole point or quickly becomes it.

He was just an average shy boy with parental issues until his father wrote him to come to Tokyo.
But see, the 'average' in this is just pointing out that he's not a mutant or something (yet). He's definitely not quite average mentally, and his father is... not the sort of person average people have as a parent. Hell, not even "come to Tokyo" has quite the same connotations in that world. Even before finding out his greater significance, the premise is a lot more interesting than "This is Joe. He's average. Then stuff happens to him. Woo!"

Hoshi no Samidare, the protagonist had savere grand-father issues that were actually well integrated with the character.
That also pulled off the "shut-in nerd to athletic warrior" transformation fairly well, since he basically just started training a lot because horrible golems are coming to kill him so maybe he should train for that.

Still didn't like it much past the beginning, though.

I am aware, I just wish it wasn't hammered in so much. It gets annoying when not only can you see that the character is obviously not a loser, but that you can sort of see it from afar.

To the point where characters who actually have to work on things, and it doesn't easily or quickly go away or somehow not an issue or shouldn't have been an issue, is actually outright stunning.

Yes, it is to the point where genuin main character flaws, that arn't for comedy, are something to admire. "What was that? the character's inexperience isn't washed away after the training montage!?! What the heck? Are they allowed to do that? Why weren't they arrested?"

Maybe you should watch more anime that have a 'tragedy' tag Neonivek?  Kaiji would be a good one in my opinion.  Or if you want to be all western, Venture Bros.  So much failure.

Dang Comedy.

Also I've seen my share of Tragedy (though hard to find some that arn't just blindly depressive or gorey). I am fine it just bugged me a bit since I watched quite a few "loser" animes in a row as well as one that was quite a good anime (though from what I hear the Manga is much better).

I just wanted to share it as well as hoping I'd actually hear of exceptions.

There was one anime that I can think of where the main character is always a loser... it just so happens that he holds the key to an entire race's wellbeing.

Ugh, don't they always?
I think I'm getting to the point where I actually want to see a show where the main character tries his hardest, and then gets instantly destroyed in his first battle and that's it. The end. It would be terrible and boring but at least original.

I've seen animes where the main character hasn't trained, practiced, or learned anything and somehow manages to beat a professional at their own game and proceeds to never be defeated even when the opponent's actually do better then the main character does, does that count?

That's even worse.

Man.  I just died in Tsukihime and I have absolutely no idea what I did or what even happened.  I didn't even have any choice that day.  I guess I'll have to go back a bit.  Or maybe just listen to Ciel-sensei's lesson.

That makes two deaths so far.  Not too shabby.

Given the Visual novel has a lot in common with Point and Click Adventures... Yeah it happens.

One of those deaths where you just go "Why did that even kill me? I was fine"

You could try Now and Then, Here and There.  Probably as close as you're going to get.  Kid loses and gets the crap beat out of him regularly.  His "never give up" attitude just gets everyone mad at him, and several hate him for it and then more terrible horrible things happen.

Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

I got fairly mad at him throughout the series, although I dunno if that was the point.

The other one I've experienced in FSN a few times is "Oh, so you're not gonna take our plothook?  Fine, we'll have you automatically make several bad decisions and get you killed.  You love walking around without your bodyguard at night, right?".

EDIT: Oh god btooom you fail physics so badly.  Saying radar waves use sound is a forgivable mistake, using a fundamentally broken view of waves to have strategies that wouldn't work isn't.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well he is pretty stupid.  And everyone pays for it.
