Let's see here, I'm bad at describing what I like. I've got no problem with subtitles.

Generally, I'm drawn to a couple of different things.

  • Hardish on a realism scale (Burn Notice like Awesome but Practical stuff)
  • Combating the supernatural with mundane means
  • Little uncertainty with events, but possible uncertainty with morality (the "what" has to be clear, or it drives me insane, but the specific mechanics or motivations can be blurry)
  • White vs. Grey morality
  • War is hell, but glorious and sometimes necessary
At the same time, I wouldn't mind branching out of my normal type of readings (I'm starting a self-improvement attempt in the near future), what are the mainish genres prevalent in Anime? I read medium sci-fi and a very few techno-thrillers (Red Storm Rising kinda spoiled me) as well as most types of fantasy. Really, it's my goal to be able to write a story that could fit into any category, or deconstruct or slightly avert it.

Wow, I like most of the things you got there Strife26.

Except replace White vs. Grey with Grey vs. Black.

And add a generous amount of fantasy to that first one. I'm a sucker for magic and shit.

As for genres...

Well, I'm not very familiar with how people categorize anime and manga, so I have no clue bro.

I was thinking about those criteria, and I had to consult my big list of animes I've watched in order to come up with some ideas. Here's what I have for you. Try taking a look at:

Starship Troopers
Paranoia Agent
Berserk
Kino's Journey

And very possibly Full Metal Panic.

That list is quite varied in the genres it spans, but they are all great anime. You can't go wrong in my opinion.

Based on those criteria, I would recommend Death Note.
There's supernatural, and there's mundane combating it.
It can be viewed as white vs grey, grey vs grey, or even black vs black depending on your opinion. The story never goes "these are the good guys, you should cheer for them", which I personally like.

Also an excellent choice, I agree.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes?

Fits criteria 1, 3, and 5 (at least pretty well). It's really big on its grey vs. grey morality, although depending on your point-of-view you might see it as white v. grey. Absolutely no supernatural stuff. It's kind of a sci-fi story, although you might argue the sci-fi is just a convenient backdrop for the top of story it's trying to tell.

Code Geass does a great job on grey vs grey.
The main characters have a very dynamic morality.

Not to mention I love dramatic scenes.

You actually might like Gundam. There's a couple of starting points you could choose: I don't really reccommend SEED, which was basically a recreation of the original show, but it's not too terrible and it's the most recent; the original Mobile Suit Gundam has a superior plot in my opinion, it's what happens when a director has to do a Super Robot show but wants to do a gritty WWII story; but the show might be a bit long and too badly animated for you, so you could also watch the compilation movie, which shortens things and fixes the most derpy animations; Gundam Wing was what brought a lot of people in the West over, but I haven't watched it and can't comment; and finally Gundam 00 is the most recent and fairly Innovative, but again I haven't seen it. Oh, and G Gundam is just crazy, but in a good way. It's probably deeper than SEED, too, if you just look past the crazy. But why would you look past the best part?

Yeah, that was a wall of text.

You could also try VOTOMS, which is about as gritty as you can get with giant robots: They're about four meters tall and there aren't any magical prototypes, just mass production models and customized MP models. In fact, you might like it more than Gundam. Of course, they're just my suggestions.

I am rather eclectic (if that is how you spell it) in that I like most genres of anime

I just don't like Gorn and Porn.

There are quite a few animes I do dislike, but not for their genre.

Errr... Not surprising, since it takes a... special... kind of person to enjoy gorn.

Otherwise, it's not eclectic, or eccentric, to enjoy all different types of genres. There's no need to cordon yourself off to only a few things in life. On the contrary, it's very healthy to maintain an open mind, as you'll find many things that you might enjoy in life. And believe me, while genres differ, quality is evident.

Yeah man.  You always gotta go out and find something new!  Don't dawdle in the old.

Anyway, I binged and finished Volume 4 of 20th Century Boys.  I read like 7 chapters in a row.  Dat rainbow kid man, good stuff.

OH yeah, I've been enjoying more of Liar Game S2.

I've deduced the purpose of the SURPRISE new character, Ryou Katsuragi, whose existence is a wild deviation from the manga: she replaces Yokoya.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, another weird change is that the pandemic game has been changed to the "Angels and Demons" game, which has the exact same rules, except now it has a angels and demons theme, obviously. Also, the pandemic game isn't a preliminary round, it's the semifinals. And instead of taking place in an abandoned warehouse, it takes place in a bowling alley (which is what the Downsizing Game was supposed to take place in). Also, Fukunaga is a part of the pandemic game with Nao and Shinichi, whereas in the manga, he wasn't.

Normally, I'd be pretty flustered at this particular flagrantly shameless change to the story, but I'm not. You want to know why?

That's all I have to say on the matter.

Also, I watched the Maze: The Megaburst Space OVA just recently. It was only a 2 episode long advertisement for the actual series, but it maintained the same high quality that the series had. Though, there is the significant difference that there is a lot.. A LOT more softcore nudity in the OVA than in the series. Actually, the series didn't have any nudity at all, so it's like the producers were trying to give it's target audience the wrong idea or something...

It just took me by surprise is all. Still entertaining.
