Episode 10 was the episode to put all other episodes to shame. The reveals, the exposition, the characterization; all of it was superbly executed. Madoka and Homura's VA's are absolutely stellar.

Thanks to Leafsnail I've been playing Umineko no Naku Koro ni for the whole day today.  Episode 1 is free and is called a demo for some reason even though it's no where near that.  I have at least 8 hours in this "game" and like 6 hours were just prologue introductions.  Thankfully the plot keeps thickening ever since dinner.

I am skipping the first 4 hundred some odd pages here...

I kinda, occasionally like anime. Not a fanatic about it.

I have watched and liked: Outlaw star, cowboy bebop, akira, Jin Rho: the wolf brigade, black lagoon, paranoia agent, berserk, Record of Lodoss War.

I generally don't like giant robots/mecha, annoying schoolgirls, highschool drama and emo looser who fail at everything and cry about it.

Any suggestions for an semi-serious to serious action/mercenary type anime, or even other suggestions. I don't mind comedy and lighter stuff occasionally if its good.

Given your list of dislikes, I would recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion. I am pretty sure it avoids all those pitfalls.

It kinda hits them all really, I mean, there's no more annoying schoolgirl than Asuka. But I'd still recommend it because it does it to show how ridiculous they are.

As for mercenary stuff. Noir and Phantom: Requiem are both good assassin shows by Bee Train. Dirty Pair and Kiddy Grade are both chick space mercenary shows and light comedies. Gunslinger Girl is loli assassins. Mnemosyne is a hyperviolent supernatural thriller, and short.

No. It's that someone could have said that about NGE in earnest. I've heard people argue that it isn't really a mecha series. The argument isn't terrible either. Just misguided.

It looks like you've gotten a good start. Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, and Black Lagoon would have been my first thoughts. In addition to what fqllve recommended, though, you might check out Speed Grapher and Darker than Black. What I've seen of Hellsing Ultimate was pretty decent, but it's not finished yet, I think.

I can't think of any show I've seen that I would put up against Firefly, though, so try not to set your expectations too high. heh heh
