I'm not too far in it so to the first point, they wear skimppy armour but thats all I paid attention to outside of the combat system.

Arbitery prize is being crowned queen.

If you want mind numbing plot with nothing the goal, I point you to Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh. I enjoyed both for the reason there isn't any over arching plot.

I looked at that one, and then a few days later by chance a freind said I should watch it, but this was the same freind who said I should watch a lot of the animes that I disliked, so I never ended up watching it.

It's very popular with 'that' crowd so the gifs you saw where probably fan made. I'm gonna give it another go when I get home so remind me later and I'll give you a better overview =)
