I don't like anime. Sell your favorites to me as good and worthwhile in under five sentences. (I might watch Gurren Langan to see what the hell those glasses are about.)

You're not worth my time unless you can describe yourself in under 5 letters.

I can describe myself in under five letters.: idiot. You may continue. (really though, does anyone know any good ones? Nothing to super robotish or staged in Japan.)

08th MS Team: Basically Romeo & Juliet. Terrible, terrible, awful dub.

MD Geist: Ultra-violence. So eighties. Bad dub.

Why not?

Ignoring the staged in Japan part: Ghost in the Shell.
Two movies, a remastered version of the first movie, and two television series.
Basically, special forces deal with terrorists in a cyberpunk futuristic Japan.
It was a major influence for The Matrix.

Holy Hell, just learned that dub Togusa is voiced by Crispin Freeman.
No wonder I like him so much.

It'd help if you gave any indication of what you'd like as opposed to what you wouldn't. For example, you probably won't like this:

Flag: Study of photojournalism and war. Very un-super robots. Takes place in fictional middle-east. Beautiful animation. Kinda boring

Are those all BONES?

edit: No. I was confusing Last Exile with Scrapped Princess.

Last Exile was Gonzo.  And Scrapped Princess... urgh.  They needed to scrap that princess before she left the brainstorming stage.

Baccano! Might fit the bill. Non-linear storytelling about a bunch of immortals and a monster on a train. Takes place in AMURRICA in the early '30s. Only 16 episodes, solid plot and action. Good anime for someone who hates anime.
