I first heard about the Buddha manga series a long time ago... but only just now have I started to read it. The story is extremely good; I've read relatively few stories set in India, and this is a really interesting glimpse into the culture, society, and stories.

The characters are awesome too... Chapra, the young slave who hides his caste in an effort to work his way up in the world; Tatta, an orphaned Pariah who can commune with and possess animals; and of course the young Siddhartha, who would become the Buddha. It's got action, solid characters, drama, and peers into a culture rarely seen in literature. I'm only halfway through book one, but I'd still highly recommend it.

I should add that there's a lot of nudity in the comic, but it isn't the sexualized sort. That's just how people lived in a lot of warm climates.

I guess you could find a fansub and then play it at the same time, while looking back and forth between them?

Let me sum up Monster so far,

Spoiler: spoils plot points obviously (click to show/hide)

Setting is 1986 Germany

Tenma is a Japanese doctor who wants to help people, nobody else in the hospital can do their jobs, all the higher ups are evil.

Tenma saves a little boy instead of the Mayor, this of course means the Mayor dies because nobody else can do their jobs.

Tenma is demoted, but decides to work his hardest anyway, oh and his wife leaves him because shes a bitch and her father is the chief of the hospital.

Tenma gives an angry rant to the boy he saved.

Boy kills everyone in hospital.

Tenma goes to ex-fiances' Dad's funeral and meets Lunge there, who is a robot investigator


Setting is now 1995 Germany

Tenma was suspected of doing the killings, but he had a solid alibi at the time (drinking at some bar)

Lunge still is working the case

Tenma is now the chief of the hospital and everything is good

Boy shows up nine years older, frames Tenma for murder (he didn't actually mean too but it's too complex to explain right now)

Tenma flees his life


Setting is the same, except Tenma is more unkept (longer hair, little 5oclock shadow

Tenma goes someplace

Screams "WHAT IS GOING ON HERE"

Figures out very little

Goes somewhere else

repeat

Does Monster start getting a bigger overall plot soon?  I'm on episode 15 now.
