I contest that even the first arc has issues enough to warrant dislike. The thing that bugs me the most, is that its almost creative. Thats its almost innovated, it just that the creator didn't bring it home.
Byakuya Kuchiki during the rescue arc, has the greatest emotional turmoil. We should have been there feeling this struggle between duty & responsibility as well as his struggle to do against his own family. Instead we get told at the end, where it doesn't have as much impact, and almost feels as an ad hoc addition to the character.
Ichigo, and his party have a weak motivation to go save Rukia Kuchiki. I have to because I must. I can't tell if their(Ichigo & Kuchiki) unrequited love is wholly of fan cloth or the writer can't present it well.
Truthfully, he being an ass hat about Soul Society. Kuchiki knows and admit she was breaking SS law, which was only brought up when she was capture. (No dramatic tension building there.) He then has the gull to belittle Byakuya Kuchiki for the imposition he is in. He suggest that he has to over throw society when ever someone finds it disagreeable.
The underlying Coup during the rescue arc, really kinda of dumped itself at the end as well. It doesn't seem like it was given enough screen time to really show that something was amiss, beside the overly obvious 'OMG THIS ISN'T RIGHT!'. Internal dialogue of some of the minor characters.
Tite was telling us the story, instead of showing us. Instead of experience the amiss events in SS, we get told their amiss.
We go on to look at Ichigo rivals. Neither of them have strong nor interesting motivations to do so.
Renji has a very tired motivation for his rivalry with Ichigo.
Ishada is a jackass; challenging random fake shinigami to prove that the Quincy should be the only one to defeat the hollows. This seems contrary to the personality of the person who can logically deduce like Sherlock Holmes.
Defeating /one/ does prove you are more efficient then all shinigami. It merely shows that you're better then that one shinigami. Second, the hollow appear more then just that prefecture of Japan. Its a world wide weakly design monster of the week. His pride at point is just selfishness arrogant jack assery.
Both of these also have the tired notion of I am your enemy, but since you defeated me in a contest, we can totally be buddies though we're gonna bicker! Yawn.
Orihime Inoue power manifestation is anticlatimic. Did Tite forget this isn't a magical girl magna? Was it meant as a parody to the genre in this shonen comic? How did he not foresee squeaky voice cute fairies betraying the dramatic tension of Orihime scenes. Also, why are they there? For myself, they feel really out of place. I do know that in later arcs, they kinda disappear, however I cant escape knowing they are squeaky voice little fairy hair clips.
Orihimie power manifestation, though is also showing nother weakness is that Tite doesn't seem to know how to use humor the story stories. We have a character like Kon, the kiddies playing at ghost busting as Tite attempt to be funny. They don't get used well. Humor in a none comedic story serves to break scene, and tension with a good chuckle so that it can rebuild. It allows for the character and audience to relax alike.
In a lot of drama you'll notice bits of humor, in good horror you'll see bits of humor. In action and adventure stories, you'll notice bits of humor. I can cite examples of films if needed.
Then we have the self identity of Bleach all together. For the shinigami saga as a whole, especially in the substitute shinigami arc, it doesn't seem to know what genre it is. It plays off the hollow at first as these suspenseful scary situations as in with things you'll find in horror animes, but it does this at time screw ball humor at random that make it seem like a light hearted show, but others we're suppose to get all choked up at Ichigo emotional struggle and convictions in his trails, because its a coming to age story. Then it decide, to sideline that and go be an action adventure story. Josh compliant that Tite doesn't seem to know where he going is displayed cleanly in the first saga.
Then we have the actiony bits, that in almost every episode. Its lack luster, and boring. Every once in a while, there is a fight that you go 'well that was cool!', but most of them arent something to write home about. These glimpses of coolness, and originality is frustrating. That Tite showing he failed to deliver something he is capable of. Samurai Jack, Afro Samurai, Samurai Shamploo, most Erel Flyn movies, and star wars episode 3: jedi murder dialogue, have it far out pace in terms of combat.
The show itself has no set rules on any aspect of its universe. In the first episode Rukia Kuchiki is shown passing through a wall. That ability seem to disappear ten minuets after that. It can't seem to decide when spirits need to eat or age. Hollow can do what the fuck ever they want. It can't even live up to its initial interjection that hollow are lost and corrupted souls when they show animal hollows in hollow land, where the blue meanie lives.
There also seems to be no flow of what makes you stronger. Hollow can get stronger by either eating a lot of hollows, or by removing their mask.
The arrs. can get stronger by putting their mast back on, but their emotionally dead. Again, I must yawn.
Shinigami make some sense. They commune with their sword, thats the manifestation of their soul, even though they are just spirits and souls themselves but the soul sword of their soul have its own soul for some reason that has its own personality and look for some reason.
They first learn to draw out their soul soul sword. Then get take out on a few dates and learn its name, like in a date sim, then they get to dominant its power, seeming to forgo the partnership aspect that was stressed as apart of learning its name.
Human like hollows, are a grab of what the fuck ever.
Tite however does pace well. I never feel like any of the episode drag along, or that any of the arc drag along. The character are nicely designed.
