(Odd, actually.  Some of the rules never actually mattered in the series)

From the article? That was form episode 19 of the first season. He was catching fish to eat because he was stuck on the island.

Yeah, but I'm trying to remember what the phrase was and if there was any way in hell they could've genuinely mistranslated that.

Although I'd say it's generally sloppy writing and occasionally a bad knowledge of English grammar that lets fansubs down, as hilarious as some of the obvious mistranslations are.

I guess you could write the sound seagulls make as something like meow, although it does seem rather... stupid.  Although since the Japanese phonetic writing for a cat sound is different, sometimes you do get a legitimate subtitle saying "Meow".

So I just finished re-re-re-watching Spirited Away. It's the first (I guess 3rd now?) time I've seen it in seven years and I've come to some conclusions I couldn't have made seven years ago:

It's just as utterly weird and awesome as it was 7 years ago.

I think it's more likely the subbers were being silly on purpose.
