Never seen that before... and it's bad story-telling practice, too, because it means you don't get the epic rivalry style stuff (or even "defeat means friendship") in DBZ, etc.

I haven't seen that before either.  I guess I don't watch enough bad shows.

Speaking of not bad stuff, Shin Anygo Onshi is on the longest arc ever currently.  I'm on part 15 of this arc and counting.  Its been going since volume 11 and it's awesome.  I'm on volume 14 currently.

What? "I wasn't trying the first time" HAS to be more common then that.

Oh, sure they say that, but that's not what the narration says... we know they're lying or in denial :3

Can't think of any. It's lesser cousin, where they 'lose' and then get serious or focused or remember why they're fighting or whatever and then win comes up a fair amount, but in terms of definitively losing fights because they didn't care, nothing.

I guess I can think of at least one instance where they lost on purpose/semi-on purpose, but there were reasons why and they died as planned, so I don't think that's really what you're talking about.

Yeah that one pisses me off a lot of the time because it is like "You are fighting for your life... how in the world did you forget your own motivations?"

There was one anime that actually handled it well because it was less that the main character forgot his motivations it is that he was trying to save "The world" and couldn't really conceptualize it. So he was told to be more honest with his own feelings and remember that he is fighting for his friends.

Well in the anime I was refering to what happened is the main character defeated the main villain of the show (Refering to Yakkate Japan)

He shows up the very next day and said he wasn't trying the entire time and then he shows a sample of what he can do when he actually tries and gives them something that would have won the entire time.

In Cardfight Vanguard... The Hero defeats his rival first episode (well second) and later says "I could tell he was taking it easy on me" at the fourth episode...

Finished volume 14 and 15 of Shin Angyo Onshi.  I'm on a roll with this series I'll finish it today probably.  Funny thing about Shin Angyo Onshi, I started this manga quite a long time ago.  I would estimate like Fall of last year although I'm sure this thread holds the exact date.  Anyway, this manga is fucking awesome and keeps on being awesome.  I don't even remember why I started it, I just did.  The scanlators are really cool too.  They stick through with the series the whole way through so I was able to download the whole series in one go.

My computer says the folder was created on February 5th 2011 but that has to be a lie.

EDIT:
I also think this is a good time to mention the current manga I'm gonna be reading now is Shin Angyo Onshi.  Which is a ridiculous seinen manga with a ridiculous protagonist.  I'm on volume 2 now and let's see if things get even better!  Maybe the guard lady will actually get some clothes?
Guess not.  :V

EDITEDIT:
And with the completion of volume 16 and 17 of Shin Angyo Onshi, I am finished.  That was an awesome read that any manga fan should check out.  The beginning is pretty adventure town-ish but it just keeps getting better after that.  I'm sad to see it's over now.  ;_;
Spoiler: *ending major spoiler* (click to show/hide)

There were a lot of awesome characters in this series, a lot.  I can't even name them all.  One of my favorite parts when I first started reading was how atypical our main protagonist is.  Munsu is just the best.

Hey does anyone other them me uttarly HATE the "He wasn't trying" retrospect done in anime?
I think it's acceptable if "not trying" in a particular fight is part of someone's wider plan (ToonyMan should know about this one).

... Was that subtitled, or dubbed?

As far as I know, the entire "point" of Crayon Shin-chan is that it's extremely offensive and shows a little boy feeling up older women, exposing himself in public, etc.  But I didn't remember the Japanese manga having anything quite like that in it.
