Ergo Proxy always seems to get mentioned along with Lain. But I've been putting it off for years because of how much 3d animation it seems to have.

Then again, I've had Kino's Journey sitting on my desk for like two months now and I actually want to watch that.

I hate all that 3D-delusion myself, but I hadn't noticed Ergo Proxy having that much of it (and I watched it at least 3 times now).
Just get ready for a lot of scenery porn, the backgrounds are truly magnificent.
I'd advise you to watch the first 3 episodes, before you decide if you like it.

Lain and it's central themes sound exactly what I'm looking for, although I usually stay away from any form of cyberpunk.
Oh well, I shall give it a try.

This will be a busy weekend.

Ah, well I've only seen trailers and amvs for it, so I guess I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions. Wish I had known it was full of scenery porn though, probably would have watched it by now.

I want something dramatic like Death Note, Code Geass, Ergo Proxy, Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent, Fullmetal Alchemist.
Something to think about.
Something with an epic soundtrack.

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION.

You will think.
And then you will cry.
And then you will think some more.

Cowboy Bebop (You've probably seen it)

Ghost in the Shell (It will become your thing if you keep watching it)

If you want really introspective stuff, do Mahou Sensei Negima or Lucky Star (Haha, I kidtroll).

These are two of the most thought-provoking* animes out there. Do yourself a favour, man, and watch them.

*EP nowhere near as much as KJ is, though. While I can't say anything bad KJ, EP certainly has got its share of problems. Still, overall, it deserves being put on the shelf next to Texhnolyze.

Hmmm. One of these das I'll have to start advertising Gasaraki. Nobody ever talks about it.

Just out of curiosity:
What problems is EP supposed to have?

YMMV, IMO etc. I hope that it's obvious.

For one, I found the amount of philosophical references crammed into every bit of scenery and script rather annoying. Virtually every character has got a name that's supposed to MEAN something, which most often is just something along the lines of "Look, we know who Aristotle was. He was a philosopher!" etc.

Some plot points did seem forced, and hole-y. Especially towards the end of the series.

And little things that just didn't make sense, which I would probably forgive in any other anime, but seeing how this one wants to be serious and internally consistent, I found those jarring.(e.g.EP gets a mask and large-size clothes, whenever he changes from his mundane form - maybe it's a nanotailorTM in his pocket, I don't know. Same as he changes back - new set of clothes, all sewn up and tidy.)

Oh for fuck's sake Madoka wish her back to life already you dumb bitch.
She's probably afraid of the whole "die horribly" thing.

Not to mention the "lose your family and your entire life up until this point" thing.

True that.

I didn't mind them.
Had spent some time, looking up all the references and looking for new ones, after finishing it. Found a lot of interesting things this way.

Oh dear, I thought the Baroque Works Saga and Skypiea Saga were the worst ones and they're right next to each other.  You're going to be dredging through that stuff until episode 200.

Man, I can't really do that. It's the same situation as with Monster - it's been years since I watched this, and I can't recollect any specifics. All I remember is that there were moments when I went "huh? That's cheap". I kinda remember that the last fight with
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
had a deus ex machina written all over it.
The whole idea of
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
also seemed rather stretched.
Still, I loved this show, it was a solid piece of science fiction.
