How about The Twelve Kingdoms?
It's like the standard fairy tale about a high school girl getting spirited away to a fantasy world(by an unicorn, no less). You're expecting all the Mary Sue'isms and wishful thinking and deus ex machinas.
And then it says: "sorry, no nonsense allowed".
Lots of action, palace intrigues, colorful monsters and rich characters. Also death, destruction, madness, abuse, cruelty and heavy responsibilities.
Boy, do I love this show.

Completely out of the blue, I have to say that Higurashi no naku koro ni is the best anime ever.

It ranks somewhere around #3 for me.
Episodes 1-4 alone make it one of the best things ever.

Are you watching sub or dub? If possible, get the sub as the original voice actors have done a terrific job at conveying the atmosphere.

I hope you are not saying you are not getting any sleep because of the anime being scary :) :)
After all, it is free for all ages (at least the games are in Japan :) :) :) ).

Hawkfrost: I am really impressed by how the anime combines the great story of the games with a really perfect visual interpretation which is further supported by the great voice acting. I mean, the choreography of the nail ripping scene (not only the process itself, but the dialogue that leads up to it), that is really just overwhelming. It really gets under your skin.

Add a helping of incredible detailed artwork, awesome action scenes, and a little sex every now and then and you've got a pretty bitching Manga.

You'll notice I didn't say a word about the story? That was intentional, I'm not going to spoil anything if I can help it.
