Hmm, well I'm further convinced that the subbers for Kuromukuro are just being crass and sexist for their own reasons, and not any "true to character" bullshit, e.g. when they translated "bitch" as "sluts".

In episode 12 they just translated "koibito" to "pussy". Koibito is just a generic term for boyfriend or girlfriend and has no specific sexual context whatsoever. Certainly zero justification to translate that to a specific term for female genitalia. This makes me question whether any of the subs which specifically put sexist slurs into that character's mouth actually have any textual justification whatsoever.

I don't speak or read Japanese, so I can't say for certain. But unless they also invented all of the other vulgarity in his dialogue and his nonverbal personality showcased on-screen is completely misleading, it might not all be a deliberate mistranslation. Certainly easy to believe that a particular sub group is shit, though, even if I haven't seen this particular expression of it before. *shrug*

If there was going to be a character in an anime who acts like a crude jackass, the "American soldier" archetype would be top on my list of suspects.

Well, Kuromukuro doesn't actually have official subs at this point. It was picked up by Netflix, who are going to simulcast the show starting in July. So we're going with amateur subs at this point. The subber is gg. On gg's website, the team leader says he just turned 18. I'm calling "immature bullshit subs" here for sure.

Some loanwords do mean different things in Japanese, he doesn't seem to be wrong. That was the archaic meaning of the word so it's not too surprising.

I would wager 70% of people who know Berserk only watched the old 90s anime, and thus for them the new show is a "sequel".
