Mecha shows tend to very nearly always err on the side of "Height of technological progress" and the mechs themselves are therefore always flashy, showy, shiny, and impressive. Are there any mech shows where the mechs themselves are just shitty? Like, just fuckin janky and clanky. Preferably made of literal garbage? I think that'd be interesting.
Megas XLR is kind of that I guess. If you wanted a shitty mech made of garbage, you could do that in your garage.

I think the issue is that mecha are so different from the machines we actually have that they can only really be justified by "technology beyond our understanding".  Kinda like how the more futuristic spaceships are the less their designs typically resemble airplanes or boats.

Pacific Rim kinda felt like that for me?  Gypsy Danger looks like it was assembled out of an airplane graveyard, Cherno Alpha is the same for a nuclear power plant.  Not actually animu tho.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

Now I'm itching for some sort of grimdark post-apocalyptic thing full of humongous scrapheap mechas.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

This makes me wish for a 40k anime so bad. :'(

I'll have to second Megas XLR. It explores the idea of a junky mech, though in this case it's a mix of unstoppable future technology and present-day scrap. It's not an anime, but I've never seen anything else exactly like it, so I feel like it's notable here.

In Robotics;Notes they build their own "mecha" from junk parts.

While mostly in manga, any mecha in Gunnm (aka Battle Angel Alita in the USA) is basically junk, given that almost all the action takes place in a colossal junk pile, where people scavenge for parts. in fact, the main character is a cyborg who was found in a rubbish heap then repaired. So not only mecha, a lot of the characters are made of junk.

Aldnoah.Zero isn't so much garbage mechs, but might be decent. You know how the protagonists in mecha anime always have this super-mech and can kill lesser mecha by the dozens? That show is where it's the bad guys that have the good mechs.

Of course, Twin is neither man nor woman but an unholy eldritch abomination like every other Bay12er. The difference is they hide it better.

I find it interesting to see the difference between the Japanese focus on conformity versus the Western focus on individualism.

If you pay close attention to anime you will often see lessons being taught that are in stark contrast to what would be it in Western animation.

Quite a few times lately have I seen a character need to take off their makeup and remove their punk attitudes in Anime.

I'm guessing I was the only one nonplussed by Madoka. I thought the fan fiction "Sailor Nothing" was a better version of basically the same thing.

Then again, I haven't bothered to watch any of the movies or sequels to Madoka at all, so there might be something there that could jolt a reaction out of me.
