In the USA you have entire states like Alabama and Mississippi. I can't see those as "better" than living in even the least developed part of Japan.
What's so terrible about living in Alabama or Mississippi?
Since we're mostly talking about rankings instead of how enjoyable (or not) living there actually is, they tend to rank worst of the US states in stats like household income (46 and 50, respectively), unemployment (6 and 3), HDI (46 and 50), life expectancy (48 and 50), obesity (3 and 1), high school graduation rates (46 and 49), and so forth.  It's bad enough that "Thank God for Mississippi" is actually a common punchline, but this still has to be put into the context that it's only being compared inside the United States.  "Poor" relative to the rest of the US is still a darned sight better than, say, Nauru, which apparently has an unemployment rate of somewhere around 90%, but darned if its average life expectancy isn't tied with the US at 79 years.

Nauru isn't comparable to a state. It's an island 21 km^2 in size with 10,000 people on it. That's comparable to a small country town. Traditionally they lived on fish and coconuts (which grow on a ~200 meter wide fertile strip around the coast), but western companies started mining phosphorous (from bird poop) there 100 years ago. This devastated the natural environment and killed off most of the fish. Additionally, jagged coral reefs prevent any large scale shipping, so they can't compete on trade either.

So you have what is basically a small town which used to rely on a mine, but now the mine closed down. And they can't even grow enough food like they used to, because of the pollution caused by the mine's existence. That's the metaphor for Nauru.

Apparently there's gonna be a movie release of "The Boy and the Beast" by the director of Wolf Children, and the trailer I seen for it just a few minutes ago makes it look awesome. Like, werewolf samurai? instant hype right there. I might go out of my way to watch it when I can.

I remember seeing the poster for that. Didn't know it was a Hosoda Mamoru film. Now I'm excited too! Looks like raw copies were uploaded about 1 week ago. It'll gets subtitles soon.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

To be fair, a lot of shows are basically just "_________ Samurai"

"Black Samurai" = Afro Samurai
"Hip Hop Samurai" = Samurai Champloo
"Female Samurai" = Moribito

But will I get tired of it? Not foreseeable in the near future, Japan's done a good job of making their medieval types retain a lot of cool points.

Is Moribito any good? I watched the other two samurai shows you mentioned and I liked them.

All fanfics are heresy, each and every one, especially the shipping ones. Those are by far the worst.

Well just finished up Puella Magi Madoka Magical. Was pretty good.
Depressing as fuck, but the main plot twist was spoiled for me by the internet before I even knew the name of the show, so expecting it blunted the impact a bit.

It's really good if you want a relatively serious anime with no fanservice and a focus on intrigue and spirituality, with no orcs or dragons in sight; probably one of the best fantasy anime I've seen.

Also, spears, for once! Judging from media you'd think it wasn't, you know, the most popular and widespread hand to hand weapon of all time or something.

Now watch the third movie, "Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion".
