The original Dragon Ball?
I don't think anybody is gonna dispute the fact that the original manga wasn't exactly... Clean.

On the subject of "Any amount of sexuality shown in an anime means it sucks and should be ignored completely" (parody)

Why hasn't Food Wars come back?

I don't think anyone is hating sexuality, just really disliking when it's used as an immature softcore porn-wannabe grab at pubescent boys. It can be used tastefully, it just requires that the author wants to use it to make his characters deeper rather than turning them into almost-there hentai characters.

And Food Wars is the best food as sex parody :P

It's only been three months since that anime ended.

Remember these shows are broadcast in a limited number of timeslots in Japan, and the planning/negotiation/funding stage for each show is many, many months at the least. And everyone involved wants to know what's happening far in advance. Would you feel secure if your company couldn't guarantee they'd have any work in 6 months? Neither do anime studios, or TV stations. They want to know far in advance which shows are in the pipeline and what the timeslot is, they probably plan for at least 6-12 months ahead, probably a bit longer. So if something is a surprise hit, it's going to take until they reach the end of their planning cycle to fit it in, and even then, it has to compete with other productions that are being pitched.

Another issue is that the manga is still ongoing. There might not be enough material for a full second season. Looking over wikipedia, the anime covered the first 8 books of the story. At the time the anime started, there were only another 4 books released. So they had no way of knowing whether the next 8 books (it will be up to 16 books this year) would have been suitable for a full second season. And who in their right mind is going to pre-order an anime series for a series of books that hasn't come out yet? The TV station and the studio both want to know what exactly they're paying millions of dollars for. They're not going to make that sort of investment until there's enough new story to do a whole season.

Speaking of CG, really I think the problem with most CG in anime TV shows isn't necessarily that the CG is bad (though if it was in a realistic film it would be considered as such), but is rather that it appears "too realistic" which causes it to not blend with the background most times. In the vast majority of cases the shading on CGI stuff is actually more present than the minimalistic shading on the background, creating the feeling of a 3 dimensional object being stuck in a semi-flat world, which makes it look badly out of place.

Thinking about it, it doesn't seem like it would be too crazy of an idea to specifically make a 3D program that was designed to match "cartoon-esque" styles of drawing by doing reduced shadows/light tracing/etc. to ensure that the CG blends with the background style properly. Heck, such a program would actually probably run much cheaper and faster than normal CG programs do, because you don't need to calculate things in-depth as much. You'd probably need to put in some extra work to ensure that any shortcuts you took didn't end up generating extra visual artifacts, but I honestly think that someone could probably make quite a bit of money with a program like that that can make CG for cartoons that fit's in and looks "good" (i.e., matches the background style) and ran cheaper than normal CG shots do.

CG in anime is currently in an awkward transition phase due to a combination of factors. Namely budget, the fact that anime studios use absolutely ancient computers, clashing artstyles since those are still being experimented with a bit (cell shading tends to work out the best for obvious reasons), Uncanny Valley flat faces, and a lack of experience resulting in awkward movement and angles caused by trying to use 2D animation camerawork techniques with straight 3D models. That last one is a problem due to the fact that those techniques have a reliance on distortion of the subject's proportions to create dynamic imagery. However things have been improving in recent years as they've been getting more use to it, and some studios have caught on to the fact that you need to warp the models to achieve the really fancy effects. The stuff put out by Studio Orange in the past couple years has been fantastic!

I'm suprised no one brought up RWBY yet since it's almost all cgi. It's not as viaually spectacular as, say, Madoka, but with the way everyone's complaining it sounds like it's impossible to do passable cgi.

Yuki Yuna is a Hero also had some good cgi with the vertex.

The overall best CGI integration I've seen was actually in Love Live School Idol Project. Just watch the original first episode up to the credits, and you can see they poured an absolute river of money into that thing to make the concert scenes look right. And it paid off. It's one of the biggest-selling series of recent years, shipping around 500,000 copies of each DVD volume. The spin-off movie has recently hit 220,000 sales copies, and you can pretty much bet anyone buying that owns the entire TV show already. Naturally, they're doing a new series in the franchise (and they'd be insane not to) which is airing in July. It's a new setting, since the old one reached the end of the story.

Love Live is basically for anyone who watched K-On but also expected a story that was actually about music. Love Live fixes that. They don't sit around just "shooting the breeze" slice-of-life-style, everything is to establish character relationships and progress the story. In K-On they say they're going to do big stuff, but it never gets done, because the characters are just lazy and talk out their asses. Love Live doesn't do that.

Truthfully a lot of the examples give me of "it done right" still look more artificial then if the animation was done by puppets.

Funny thing, the last portion of K-On's original manga, which wasn't adapted into an anime, was actually about the cast going to college and meeting their upperclassmen who actually take their band stuff seriously, and ends with them realizing that they are absolutely nothing in comparison to them.

But in the context of the conversation it's a valid example of animation done wholly with CGI.

I'd say that one of the central issues is this: mixed drawn and CGI almost always looks terrible; CGI people almost always slip into the uncanny valley. So with pure CGI shows you often end up with creepy, repellant characters ruining things (worse still if they're like KoS and don't use traditional anime conventions to distinguish between individuals), with mixed shows you end up with CGI elements which are jarringly out of place (with a few exceptions), and so on.

It'll be solved in time with better CGI, but for now it's a catch-22 for any studio that wants to use CGI in some capacity.
