if I remember correctly, which is something they needed to do considering how many times he should have died and was saved only by its miraculous intervention - without it, the part where it seems insulting to the people he's fighting is a pretty valid criticism.

It's not even just that; almost every fight Shirou engages in turns into sixty different ways of saying "Shirou parried desperately" and his opponent being surprised that he managed to knock their weapon away. Despite fighting against people who can swing so quick it becomes invisible to the human eye, can blow a hole through a wall with their bare hands or annihilate a tank with a single arrow, and literally have abilities such as "an unblockable attack that never misses and always kills the target".

I'd be okay with him being a hero and all that, even, I mean he does have

the potential to become a Heroic Spirit.

which has to come from somewhere. But I'm really confused by that whole chain of events, too.

In UBW, Archer still has the pendant that Rin used to heal Shirou. If Archer hadn't been summoned, Shirou would never have learned to replicate Archer's magic. Really, future Archer could not even exist if it weren't for the fact that he was summoned for the future. How the heck is this whole time thing supposed to be working? ._.

IIRC In the Archer timeline Shirou sortof figured out bits of the power by himself as in the Fate Route, and then obtained the rest from Gaia upon making the contract.

At least in the anime, he explicitly states that he kept it his entire life after she saved him. After watching the next couple episodes, I've just accepted the fact that time shenanigans are a part of the plot, it hurts my brain to think about it too much.

I didn't find the time stuff too confusing. It's pretty circular but whatever.

It's a semi-stable time loop, IIRC. There's speculation that Archer is from the cut Ilya route that never made it into the VN, though we don't see Archer and Ilya interact much anywhere.

Which is in and of itself kind of suspicious. Almost every other character at least meets every other character, even if it's only in Hollow Ataraxia, but Archer and Ilya never meet.

The only other pair I can think of-  actually, nevermind, Shirou and Bazzette meet in that big Grail Room thing.

Besides, Ilya best girl.

There are multiple timelines in FSN, hence the routes.  Archer isn't from any of the major ones (although there's a bad ending in HF he could have arisen in), but he's someone that Shirou could have become.

Does timeline even matter? Isn't it that if you're employed by the world as a hero, you exist in all points of spacetime already?
