Yes, Japanese Puritans, the show about child soldiers in a strongly anti-war franchise is obviously lighthearted and family-friendly!

I love the actual main argument that the phrase "Iron-Blooded Orphans" makes you think it's a kid's show.

Well actually the non-OVA Gundam series have historically been marketed to kids, so they soooortof have a point on that mark when combined with that the show airs at 5 PM.

I've already shown him the series, I don't think doing it again but prefacing it with shitty anime would work. :V

At least they're bitching about literal murder by the main protagonist. As THINK OF THE CHILDREN goes that's pretty reasonable.

Though I'm guessing the point was to show how terrible war was and what it did to people, rather than because our hero is just so cool he has to gun down dozens of prisoners for insulting his sister.

Well... maybe you could lower his standards after the fact...?

Yeah, it's like, there are series and scenes which glamorize war. That was not one of them.

You know the anime Hetalia?
I was watching Episode 14 of it, and saw a brief appearance of South Korea in there.
I decided to make research of South Korea from Hetalia.
It turns out they originally planned a South Korea character in Hetalia... but South Koreans wanted to ban Hetalia just because they didn't like their representation...so Hetalia REMOVED South Korea from the anime!

To be honest, that's not very surprising, given that the Koreans and the Japanese don't have very good opinions about each other. It kinda tends to cause shitstorms whenever Korea gets mentioned in anime.

On a whim, I started up an anime I knew nothing about: Vividred Operation. To give you an idea of what it's about, if you happen to know what Strike Witches is, VO is literally the exact same show:

>Young Pigtailed girl
>Is given magical girl powers through technological means
>and with her similarly 'magical' friends
>fight mysterious and alien enemies
>all for the sake of fanservice.

The only appreciable difference is that in VO the girls can do Gattai Combination Transformations, joining their young fanservicey selves into a single bigger and bustier fanservice woman. There was a detail that the girls memories also join together, but I'm halfway through the series and so far that detail has been relevant only once, so yeah, just fanservice.

I'd honestly have thrown the series away, but it honestly feels really cute and fun, and the setting the show is placed in has the markings of some actual inspiration.

Actually there was a link between Vividred Operation and Strike Witches, or so I heard ... checked it out and it's the same director. He also did the character designs for both series.

Also, Symphogear is in a similar vein except more plot (although a completely bonkers plot), and less fanservice. A lot of myanimelist reviews complain that the plot of Symphogear wasn't serious enough. But I can't understand that particular criticism, because a series about technomagical pop idols who have to sing songs to stayed powered up while they fight ancient aliens known as "The Noise" sure sounds like it's trying to be serious doesn't it? Also, Chris = best girl, with her attacks named after bands such as Iron Maiden and Megadeth.

That also reminds me of the Milky Holmes reviews that complained that there weren't enough Sherlock Holmes style mysteries, and therefore the show sucks. Well no, it would suck for that reason if there were mysteries but they weren't done very well. In fact, there were no mysteries at all, which should tell you something. Complain about other things in the show, but don't complain that it isn't a sherlock holmes style murder mystery series, because it's clear from the very start of episode one that it's not going for that.

Yeah, I just finished the series (it's only 12 eps, a real quickie of a series) and it's a show that almost parodies the 'power of friendship' trope. Even though the power they have is rooted in technology, the strong friendship is still emphasized by the scientist that created it. When the protag first gets her suit, her friend got it at the same time so there's literally no point in the series where anyone is fighting alone. Speaking of alone, that's that the alien enemies are called, just "Alone", and true to their name, they always attack alone, only ever phasing into existence one at a time.

And I say it's a fanservicey series, but there's nothing gratuitous. Just frequent and unnecessary close-ups of butts all the goddamn time. Not even panties, just butts. The literal very first second of the very first scene is a butt. And everyone is wearing short-shorts as part of some in-universe mandatory dress code, but other than that everything is actually very cutesy and tame. Still though, I'd feel a lot less embarrassed trying to discuss the show if the service just wasn't there, but that director just has an obsession that he can't get out of his system any other way.

For a rando anime I picked up for no reason, I'm not upset at this one though. Was fun the whole way through.
