That's actually part of why I suspect that that's not actually what happens and it was invented as an excuse to wipe out the Quincies.

Or it might just be a plothole, but I'm sure that no shonen series ever has those in its hundreds of chapters of incoherent backstory.

Or it might have been not as much of a problem as 100s of 'em wiping out souls left right and centre, but eh.
Who really cares, at this point?

Coincidentally enough, the Quincy filler arc has one of the only moments from the show that I still remember fairly clearly: When the soul bow glasses guy is talking to his father (or was it his brother? Uncle? I can't remember) and the guy is talking down to him and says " I have no interest [in being a Quincy] but you have no talent!". That just stands out in my mind as a small gem of good writing that managed to get into the show, if only because it's such a subtle jab at Tite Kubo from whomever was writing the filler arcs.

I also just finished Shokugeki No Souma, and the food porn is real, it's super real. I can't wait for season two.

Quincys aren't filler, they're canon, in the actual manga Ichicgo is half quincy (but not any of the other crap people accuse him of being, he is clearly defined as half-shingami half-quincy.)  But if you're talking about the garbage pulled during the atrocious Bount arc, then yah, filler.

Continuing to check out the current season. Watching Dance with Devils. It's a shoujo / reverse harem anime. The best thing about it is that characters burst into song for no reason every so often and sing about what's happening on the screen.
 
Skipped almost all the highschool/magic/harems. There seem to be more than usual this season, and none of them look any good. Watched half an ep of Heavy Object but it looks way too dull and uninteresting.

Started Comet Lucifer. It's typical mecha / dumb action but could be some fun. Lots of plot holes so far but at least there's no magical highschool kid and harem antics, and the plot is pretty dynamic (so far).

Started Noitamina's new series Subete ga F ni Naru, I'm really liking the aesthetic so far. EDIT: There are also maths puzzles in this anime. Along with Owarimonogatari, maybe mathservice is a new thing?

Ichigo is half-shinigami, half-quincy and can turn into an arrancar/hollow half-thing.  Though, the last one I think doesn't have to do with lineage... I don't remember.  Oh right, he can also tap into that human power thing too if I remember correctly.
At the end of this manga arc, he will ascend and have some sort of soul king/aizen power thing too.

EDIT: ... Basically everyone else is more interesting then Ichigo, except before the first time Ichigo n Co heads into Soul Society.  (The characters that interact more often with him are dragged down in the interesting meter.)

The last one has to do with the way A. regained his powers due to the whole soul chain thing that got cut and what not and B. something to do with some hollow or other apparently possessing his mother, or something? I quit reading slightly after it was revealed Ichigo was also half-Quincy among all the other things, so I dunno, its just a thing I saw around.

The newest episode almost made me drop it entirely. It was possibly the most absurd character introduction I've ever seen from a series that's not intentionally absurd. The character himself?

1. Attacked the protagonists with functionally zero provocation.
2. ^With no coherent motivation or potential gain.
3. Was "coincidentally" a super-hacker who had only once before committed a crime...
4. ^Which was the exact same MO but an entirely different goal.
5. ^And was known to the primary antagonist despite it happening more than a decade ago, him not being directly involved, and the whole affair being a one-off cold case.
6. ^And all of this mysteriously came together at the exact time the antagonist needed to recruit a super-hacker for his team.
7. ^Who he somehow managed to find in that huge fucking city despite the guy having successfully hidden for years and the antagonist having no idea where he was.
8. Also the super-hacker is an overt pedophile who spent most of the episode lusting over the weird crystal-feather-girl.
9. Also also he engages in Hollywood hacking where he taps at a keyboard for thirty seconds of onscreen text scrawl and the entire city infrastructure grid shits itself. And apparently everything from traffic lights to conveniently placed construction mechs to ski lifts to the fucking pressure of the SEWERS is controlled through the same system.

I spent the entire episode asking myself what the fuck was happening.

Now that I absolutely agree with.  I could spend a few hundred more chapters with Soul Society or Heco Mundo without Ichigo showing up at all.

Hmm, ok I'll have to get up to that and see what I think myself. Must. Not. Read. Spoilers.

BTW: just looked at the first episode of Utawarerumono - Itsuwari no Kamen. This looks like a pretty decent fantasy show so far. It looks like more of a character-interaction based show (e.g. a spice and wolf kind of show) than it is the good-vs-evil fantasy action show, though there's probably a bit more action to come in this. It's been entirely free of any hint fanservice so far, for those who get annoyed at such things. It seems to be a "sequel" to Utawarerumono, but has entirely new main characters, so I'm guessing it's competely stand-alone and is set in the same world. It looks decent enough to encourage me to check out the original show.

If there is one thing I really like about Food Wars it is that...

While a lot of animes that feature elite schools or competitions usually bug me when the inherent unfairness or missing features kick in (A elite school that doesn't have translation services? Seriously? Basic public schools where I live have that!)

In Food wars... No they don't try to trick you or lack self-awareness. The school SUUUUUUCKS! and is so unbelievably unfair it boggles the mind.

It feels like a parody of elite American schools that try to seem more elite not by offering a better curriculum, materials, or services but by basically making their schools 20 times more exclusive to trick people into thinking they are more elite.

Hey want somewhere to sleep tonight? Well you need to cook a A+ meal that you are at school to learn how to do. Made one minor mistake on one test? Expelled. I don't like your face? EXPELLED! Don't know how to hunt? EXPELLED! Don't know quantum mechanics? EXPELLED! Vegetarian? EXPELLED! In a wheelchair? EXPELLED! (By the by... only one of these are a fake example)

All the while they provide no extra tutoring, their classes are absolutely basic (In fact they aren't even classes), their grounds are so needlessly large and mazelike, their clubs are overspecialized, and the ruling body essentially does nothing but pillage the other faculties (Imagine if your Class President's job was that they are able to steal pencils off of you), AND you still have to pay a fortune for your own ingredients a lot of the time anyhow (Good think most of the school are trust fund babies).

Watching Plastic Memories, and I have the feeling it's gonna be lame. Something about the introduction-exposition-introduction-exposition cycle of the first episode is giving me bad vibes. I'm going to keep watching, but I'm not expecting anything fantastic.

Give it three episodes. Some animes just unleash the exposition bomb the first episode and some do it the second episode.

Plastic Memories is pretty good once it gets going, though it does drag at spots. Also, there are some very fundamental questions about the setting/plot that, to my recollection, are never answered. It's like if Blade Runner never explained what replicants are, where they came from, why Deckard is hunting them, etc.

A Ghibli made Back to the Future would actually be something I'd be quite interested to watch.
