Finished Betterman last night. Was pretty weird. I think I missed some details. It took me a while to get into it because of how I didn't even realize it was suppose to be a mystery thing until the first recap episode. Really weird to think that it took place in the same universe as GaoGaiGair.

Isn't Gaogaigar the childfriendly super robot show? I can't imagine what it has in common with the show that has a swarm of angry tube worms converge and corner a group of scientists to eat them. Or where they're all suddenly controlled by brain-insects. or with the guy that eats pine cones to turn into a godzilla reject.

Yah, but it's actually canon that they're the same universe. Betterman takes place a year or so later, and has some background references to it, and a few cast members are relatives of GGG characters (Akamatsu is one of the sons of Liger Shisioh and is Guy's cousin for one thing). And the canceled Project Z anime would have been a direct sequel to both of them, with the released promotional material showing the main bot would have been cobbled together from the remains of the Kakuseijin with leftover GaoGaiGai spare parts.

Man it kinda sucks that that was cancelled, cause I just eat up stuff like that. I haven't even watched GGG but that would have been an easy sell with me. I bought friggin Project X Zone on the 3DS just cause I love crossover action so much, even though I can't identify half of the characters in that damn game.

Decided to give No Game No Life a try, because apparently it's popular or some crap.

By first opening a new tab to its entry on myanimelist.net and observing the genres list.
Quote
Genres: Adventure, Comedy, Ecchi, Fantasy, Game, Supernatural
Then asking yourself if this is the type of show you want to be watching, and if so, can you deal with the things it might throw at you.

Then, either go watch the show or go watch something else, it's only ranked number 78 in overall rankings on myanimelist, so that's at least 77 other possibilities you could go watch instead should you choose to do so. :P

It's not as if it isn't notorious for being incestuous haremshit.

inb4 the "it's totally not a harem!" fanboys. j/k, we don't really get that type here.

As an example of "the exception that proves the rule", I called it a harem on another forum, pointing out that Sora is the only male character of any note, while there are a ton of girls - and they basically only interact with him, not each other. Some objected, and pointed out two male characters I'd overlooked - the grandfather of the pricess, and the god character that's introduced in the first episode. Now, if the only mentionable competition to the MC for girls' attention are an old man with a beard like Gandalf and a disembodied spirit who never interacts with the girls, that basically proves the rule.

EDIT: For that matter, what do the girls think of each other? Even Shiro, supposedly the co-MC with Sora, what does she think of the other characters? We basically have no idea since she only exists through her interactions with Sora. Sora is the only one with any characterization or interactions with more than one other character, and he's pretty one dimension even so. All the effort in the writing was setting up the elaborate puzzles set-pieces, not writing clever characters, dialogue or plot.

The "plot" is basically laughably bad, linear and predictable. It's like it got stuck in it's own formula from page one. Lolis play in the bath. Then Sora wins some elaborate game. The he alternately gains a big-breasted vixen or another loli for his harem. Then the lolis soap each other up in bath again. Then there's another game. Rinse and repeat (in the bath with the lolis). The whole meta-story is about how the world is a chess game, and he has to win 16 chess pieces to conquer the world. And he "never loses" - that's actually the catchphrase, so there's never a situation that challenges the hero, and he just gains the chess pieces in a linear fashion while gaining another loli admirer each time.

And in 12 episodes they get through 2 chess pieces out of 16 worth of conquest, so at that rate it's going to be a repetitive formula for another 7 seasons if they ever go on with it. And it already got into a massively predictable rut in the first season. Are they really going to animate the next 14 conquests interspersed with yet more loli bath time?

Ehh Ecchi can be good... I wouldn't bank on any popular Ecchi to be good though.

I have nothing against ecchi specifically. The terribly predicatable plot arc in NGNL offended me more. Mentioning about the bath scenes was just as much about pointing out the sheer amount of filler and predictableness that the show has. You can set you watch by the loli bath scenes. One will happen the episode after each major victory (which is when Sora gains another haremete).

It's one of those things where there's a linear progression laid out from episode one and the story never deviates from that, basically having side-plots which are complete filler to pad it out. Even the games, supposedly what we are there for have no specific ramifications once they are completed. So they play this game and play that game, they always win and the obtain all the "race pieces", which are chess pieces owned by the races. Hell, "Blank never loses" is the series catchphrase, so it's written into the story that they never lose at anything. Which basically means you have this rich world with interesting races, yet nothing interesting ever happens in the plot ... no plot twists, no unexpected occurances or deeper stuff, nothing. So there's basically no tension where you're wondering what is going to happen next.

Isn't good ecchi just something that's good anyway but happens to be ecchi?

Which, incidentally, makes NGNL pretty bad, given that almost everything other than the softcore porn seems to be weak as soggy newsprint.
I'm enjoying it so far, though that's not indicative of much because my tastes are weird as hell. It has enough ridiculous nonsense with the games going on to maintain interest, in any case.

Hey if you like ecchi you like ecchi.

It isn't like there is an alternative.

To be perfectly frank, if something is designed first and foremost to titillate, it's probably going to be shit, and claiming any other interest is usually the equivalent of saying that you read Playboy for the articles or watch porn for the acting.

Somewhat amusingly, NGNL's Engrish title actually sounds like a tongue in cheek joke about the series if you parse it differently. There's no real gaming involved because the outcomes are predetermined, and the plot is lifeless and shallow.

I think a bit of ecchi on the side can add a bit of spice to a manga. Some things though where there's like a panty shot or topless shot every other panel/scene and OH MY GOD IT GETS IRRITATING.

Yeah, I'd say that (as we saw in that poll someone did a while back), fanservice isn't necessarily bad, and can add a bit of spice to a story. On the other hand shows that are built around fanservice as a selling point (and are usually the ones marked "ecchi" from what I've seen, the others often aren't necessarily marked as that) are really something you should probably only be watching if that's what you are looking for.

Which isn't to say that they can't be mainstream popular, look at what happened with 50 shades of grey after all. :P

I make an exception for High School of the Dead...just because it's so good. It just could have been so much better without the "boing" sound effects :(
