Not really a budget issue necessarily, but the new Haruhi spin-off is animated by a different company to the rest of the franchise. Some of the character designs are so different that it's off-putting. It's probably more related to not having the legal rights to Kyoto Animation's character designs than anything else. Kyon looks about 12 years old now and Haruhi just looks like a totally different person. Coming straight off the back of the high quality animation from the movie (which this season spins off from) it's especially jarring. At least the voice actors are the same...

Back to SNAFU, it's not violent, and it's not fanservicy. A school comedy/drama with a little more substance than others. It's one of those (rare) examples that you can't always judge a show by it's premise or character art. Compare two animes with similar premises, but completely opposite execution:

If you just read the synopses, they could be very similar shows. Except one is a barrage of boobs and onsens, and the other has interesting plots.

Either that or they are trying to make the characters MORE appealing to the general Haruhi audience.

And before you take insult... COME ON!!! you know who the major fanbase of the show is...

That would make sense if the designs were actually cute or there was more fanservice than before.

They're less cute and there's less fanservice. How is that appealing to otaku base instincts?

And of course, that ignores the base idea that people get attached to a particular character design. Changing it completely without adding anything interesting isn't going to sell more merch.

Haruhi doesn't look any younger. She just has a butt-ugly monkey-face now.

It's only the main guy Kyon who I said looks like a little kid compared to before.

It's mostly that it's based off a manga spinoff who's artist had an artstyle that is very noticeable different from the usual Haruhi.

Just finished Ergo Proxy after starting it on Saturday night. That was... certainly a thing. Pretty abstract toward the end. I'll need to mull this over.

On the topic of K-On!, I really like the outfit Mio is wearing in the closing credits. I wanna wear it sometime if I ever get into cosplay.

Well, I really liked it, personally. Never heard of it before I got it off one of my friends, though. It seems really old, since it wasn't in 1080P.
