If you're new to anime, I'd recommend watching some movies rather than complete series. There's less time investment, and if you see something you like it's pretty easy to find more in a similar vein. Basically everything directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Hosoda, or Makoto Shinkai is pretty good.

They're all really good directors, but their works are almost entirely non-action anime. Most of the good action stuff is series, not stand-alone movies.

Personally I think the "time investment" thing is debatable: watching a 25 minute episode of an anime could be a better utilization of time than sitting down for 90 minutes for a movie, since if you didn't like the first episode of a show you could feel more free to drop it straight away, whereas it would feel weird stopping a feature film after 25 minutes. You can sample 4 different shows in the time to watch 1 movie, then make a decision to carry on / not carry on with any of those series.

A 12/13 episode anime is effectively the length of a trilogy of movies.

Vector said so? Then maybe Boku no Pico?

For movies, you could try Sword Of The Stranger?

If you want any series it would be better to sort them by genre you're interested in. For example I hate giant robot shows like nothing else, except for Tengen Toppa Guren Lagan and Neon Genesis Evangelion, two shows that couldn't be any different (former is Humanity Fuck Yeah! The Anime, and later is, well.. ). There's always other must see series, Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, Elfen Lied, Hellsing Ultimate, Kill la Kill...

Let's see...

Samurai 7 is an amusing movie. It's very much "anime that's like people say anime is like," in that it's about samurai cutting apart giant robots.

For less ridiculous and fairly neat action, try Samurai Champloo. It's about samurai ronin really skilled people with sharp things having often absurd, usually murderous adventures.

Cowboy Bebop is by the same people but set IN SPAAAAACE, and has similar overtones with bounty hunters. It has some of the best dark humor I've ever seen, so if you like one, you should probably try the other.

Afro Samurai is very similar in vibe to Samurai Champloo, but infinitely darker and more stylized. I thought it was really cool, but it is a bit on the gory side, and is very short. If you like the not-choppy/adventure bits of it or the choppy bits of Samurai Champloo, consider watching the other.

Little Witch Academia is an adorable standalone mini-movie thing that will probably make you wish there was more.

I can second Fullmetal Alchemist and Hellsing as being pretty good for what they are, which can mostly and lazily be summarized as "magic" and "vampires" respectively. Both have two versions, of which it is generally agreed that the closer-to-manga remakes (Brotherhood and Ultimate, respectively) are better.

Kill La Kill and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan are both ridiculously over the top and awesome, featuring giant robots in the latter case and I don't even know in the former. Kill La Kill in particular I dare you to watch for five minutes and not be down for the rest.

Redline features a pompadour. If that's not enough, it features a space elf with a pompadour. If that's still not enough, you're probably a lost cause but it's a racing anime movie. With, you know, guns and such, obviously.

That's all that springs to mind at the moment, and half of them were already recommended or I was reminded of by others.

I actually have no idea why that warrants this reaction, but I figured it'd be a good excuse to kill somebody.

Boku no Pico deserve an explicit newbie warning for being really explicit and just fucked up. Don't even google this, it''s a troll recommendation of the most horrible thing on the planet, designed to mentally scar anime newbies.

"It's like Satan lent me his porno collection" is one of the famous reaction quotes related to this show. And it's not "Satan's porno collection" in any good way, just a brain-bleach needing way. And highly illegal in many countries.

Well shit. I was gonna make a Strike Witches joke, but I guess we're talking about the big leagues here.

Slightly worse than recommending Puella Magi Madoka Magica for little kids that just saw that new Sailor Moon and want to see more shows about magical girls. Apply NGE for mecha genre.

So I finished SAO, and I'm kinda really disappointed. It started out as a great concept, but then it just got worse and worse. I kept going until the end because I always wanted to know what happens next, and because I hoped it would get better again, but it didn't. I wouldn't recommend it, and I definitely won't watch the third season (I have absolutely no idea why I happen to know that a third season is happening).

Will keep in mind, thanks.

Heh. Personally, I thought the start of Season 2 was a massive neon warning sign. "GIRLFRIEND ABDUCTED BY CREEPY BUSINESSMAN, MUST ENTER GAME AGAIN TO SAVE FROM HAVING TO MARRY HIM" is not what I would call a promising plot hook. :P

I do kinda have an excuse for not being genre savvy. :P
