I just finished the episode of Death Note where
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I enjoyed it, but I'm not really interested in the story with Near. Is it worth watching?
What Neonivek said. If you were watching the show to see L get caught then the second arc or whatever you'd like to call it may not seem worth it. If you were watching to see Kira get caught on the other hand, or if you're at all interested in how Light keeps being the evil mass-murdering mastermind without L in the way, then it's worth finishing the series, yes.

So apparently there are people who genuinely enjoy Mahouka???

I don't particularly care though, people enjoyed Twilight as well. That thread got me some decent pictures though.

I've never actually watched/read it, but I hate the smug bastard already.

I'm reading the Mahouka wiki page for Tatsuya.

The major reason Mahouka gets on my nerves is it really is a testament to "Informed weakness" in its purest form.

We are TOLD how weak his magic is... so what does he do? He proceeds to magic circles around everyone else.

Is it because he finds some way to make his very little magic work for him? No his magic is just that fantastic.

Basically his magic is more powerful because SCIENCE! which I could accept (after all the amount of Gunpowder in a bullet is nearly harmless) except he doesn't have to work at it or anything. His magic described also isn't getting the most out of a little magic, it is just flat out magic.

The anime is literally trying to make an underdog out of the guy who in a normal anime would be the "Super elite" person at the top looking down on everyone.

Mind you I am REALLY questioning if Mahouka isn't a Parody and everyone is just overlooking that. I mean, it really must be a parody.

Well it is either a Parody (or intentionally terrible writing)

Or this is honestly terrible fanfiction level writing that you enjoy ironically.

The wiki had... sort of some more information on this.

Quote
Tatsuya is a child born from the Yotsuba family. Although this is the case, he wasn't accepted as a legitimate member due to the fact that he cannot wield magic. The two types of magic he can freely wield are not considered magic by the family's standards due to its nature of only 'destroying' and 'restoring' information, not 'altering' them.
Which might actually be a fair distinction- oh, he's not a real mage, because he can't change anything, he can just blow it up or glue it back together.

Quote
In order to allow him to use "magic", his mother and her twin sister operated on Tatsuya when he was 6 years old, installing a magic processor into his mind allowing him to use magic. However, it was inferior to a natural processor so the only advantage the processor granted him was that it allowed him to instantly access short magics (5 steps or fewer) instantly without any buffer or calculation. Since most combat magics use 5 steps or fewer, they are available to him. Also, because the processor can show him the exact magic that needs to be used, he can only use a very long round-about method to execute complex magics (hence why he failed the speed portion of the practical). He is also very adept at manipulating Oscilliation Magic.
Then we have this, which is... trickier. Essentially, he's a savant who can use other types of magic, but only if it's below this certain threshhold... which almost all combat magics are. So again, crippled but not meaningfully, at least in combat.

As a side note, under any other circumstances I'd consider the above a spoiler. I don't think that's possible here.

Of course, then he's also a genius researcher and a martial arts master, and none of the above explains why he's able to, say, defeat gravity. Did he just blow it up or something? Did it take less than five steps? Is he MacGyver even though he has to do everything the long hard way?

Which brings us back to OH NO LOOK AT HOW HIDEOUS HIS BEAUTIFUL ANGEL WINGS ARE SURELY HE WILL BE HATED FOR THEM.

It is still a weakness that isn't a weakness.

Since lets say that... he cannot make a dragon because it is a 100 step magic spell... Well he can cast an infinite number of 5 step magic spells in a short period of time. He could just create a dragon piece by piece.

This is the equivalent of saying that someone can never be an effective runner because they can run lightspeed... but need to take a half-second break every 10 meters.

As well as you said it never shows up.

It is once again a "weakness that isn't a weakness" like those "Losers who can never get a girl" in harem animes who for some reason get all the girls.

>traditional shinobi[2] magic

Oh wow.

>Tatsuya can see up to 24 hours into the past, allowing him to use his skill Regrowth, returning an object to whatever state it was in at any point in those 24 hours. ...Tatsuya, the only mentioned user of this magic...Theoretically, this could also allow him to see the future, but at the moment he is unable to do that.

I bet he'll reveal his future-sight in the next 5-10 chapters.

>he is only capable of sniping 12 targets simultaneously

only 12 targets simultaneously

over-the horizon sniping

sniping with nuclear blasts

is this guy for realz?

What is funny is that his weaknesses are less believable at this point then his strengths.

Do you HONESTLY believe he can only snipe 12 target simultaneously? Do you? Even now you are probably thinking of ways how he can easily overcome this.

seeing as his magic activates in 0.05 seconds, that means he can theoretically snipe 12/0.05 = 240 targets per second.

This has got to be some kind of record.

Remember, 12 targets is only the limit for the nuclear explosions, which sound more like matter / anti-matter explosions actually.

Depending on the type of shot, it can be 24, or 36. So we're looking at max 720 targets  per second with his 0.05 cast time.

So what's the expected upper limit? Ten thousand hits per second?

I'd think 240 nuclear explosions per second would be enough for him.

It's like bullet hell, except he shoots nuclear explosions instead of bullets.
