In all fairness you have to compare Akira to anime movies. Preferably ones that aren't extensions of a already existing series.

Sometimes I find the art enhancement in an anime movie to be odd and sometimes it works.

So compare Akira to... The Secret World of Ariati (or however you spell that) or "The Cat returns"

Goodness it is like only ONE person is making all the original anime movies.

Maybe, you don't look around then. There are plenty of anime movies made which aren't part of an existing anime series.

You have Makoto Shinkai (made tons of movies), and Mamoru Hosoda (Girl Who Leapt Through Time, The Wolf Children: Ami and Yuki, etc) as other big-name directors.

Aritetty is based on a book, as are a number of other Miyazaki/Ghibli films. (Grave of the fireflies, Howl's Moving Castle, Earthsea). So one-off films that are made from a book or short manga are equally as original as a Ghibli film.

Plus a number of famous Ghibli movies were not directed by Miyazaki, but by Takahata, i.e. Grave of the Fireflies, which some people consider the greatest Ghlbli movie. He doesn't get much credit when you say "one man makes them all"

10 for 2010, so since I'm too lazy to do 2011-2014 I'm estimating 45-50 original anime feature films in the last 5 years alone.

I shouldn't have said "original" I should have said not based on an existing anime.

Since even I should have remember that the Secret World of Arieti (and inspiration for a few western books) was based upon something else.

It just feels that way sometime. Especially when some are done in the same or very similar art styles.

I heartily agree with this--my jaw dropped so many times the first time I watched Akira, especially with the bike sequences. That, and the wider shots tended to be quite stunning; so much anime just skimps out on the scenery porn. Even the story had a rather unique cyberpunkish-but-not-quite flair that I absolutely adore, and like the art there was just so much heart to it. In a strange way it sort of reminds me of SDF Macross, if SDFM didn't use tons of stock footage and didn't have hideous facial structure on nearly every character.

I am starting to realize how many characters from Samurai Champloo have stand ins or style stand ins in the Way of the Samurai series.

every single character from that anime who has fought has had their style in the game... I am kind of surprised. Even some from the fillers.

I just finished watching fantastic children and to sum up my experience...

I was really bored with it the first 11 episodes, then at 12 there's just this huge exposition that comes out of left field.

They're aliens possessing the bodies of children to find their princess on earth, who's spirit is trapped in a human, yep. Also, SCIENCE.

Then suddenly it whisks me off to watch three episodes of what could have been an entirely different anime, then it returns to fantastic children and SHIT GETS REAL.



DRINKING GAME: take a drink every time a character has a BSOD moment, screams, or passes out. (good luck)

Yeah, I agree on the message. I felt like the movie passed off a lot of bullshit as "this isn't really immoral, because it's happening to a stupid or ugly person," though.

Reminds me when I played Freedom Force Versus the Third Reich and I INSTANTLY picked out who the villain was because he was ugly.

I couldn't watch Akira cause everytime i do, it ends being a drinking game with every TETSUOOOO!!!

Akira is the climax of the drawing ages of anime. You are not going to find anything like that anymore todays age with mocap or CGI which i don't mind if its not done with dirt cheap art. Makoto Shinkai's artstyle blows my mind everytime i see his movies. The amount of background detail is just so absurd cause how lifelike it is.
