Ok new show just aired. Knights of Sidonia, a manga adaptation. The first hard-sci-fi looking anime I've seen in a while. Possible anime of the year for me, very dark in tone. Looks like it uses a lot of CGI, but I kinda like the look of it, bleak, a lot like the short film "Pale Cocoon".

Have you seen Planetes?  Just wanted to let you know if you hadn't--it's the last hard sci-fi I saw.

The only anime I know of that's actually themed around mahjong is Akagi. And Ten, but I think that's only a manga. But they're less about the game and more about psychology. And lots of cheating.

It's not gambling unless you cheat.

I haven't had the time to read The Legend of Koizumi but I certainly should, maybe this year.

I LOVED PLANETES. The angst between Tanabe and Hachimaki was frustrating near the end, but it was sooooo worth it. All the stuff they were going through~!! My favorite ending of all time too. *sniff*

It also had one of my favorite total character mind break moments, from just how emotional they make it. A good use of music mixed with a quite horrific situation.

The scope of Planetes certainly explodes after about halfway, wouldn't you say? From teaching a rookie to collect debris all the way to massacres.
In a similar way to Hellsing Ultimate, take out all the awkward humor parts and it's quite an amazing show.

Absolutely. I was rather put off (at least until I learned more about the Jupiter Project) because there weren't anymore cool missions where they were collecting stuff, and I also really liked the character drama between the characters in Half-Section while they were sitting around in the office.

..Russian (I think? I remember his name being Ivan?) dude's wife was the one who dies every time in the intro. And he had been looking for her necklace ever since the debris problem blew up and that it's his whole motivation for being a debris guy. And when he finally finds it.. He just lets it go..

I haven't had the time to read The Legend of Koizumi but I certainly should, maybe this year.

I still remember it as the only context where you can put "George W Bush" and "Over Nine Thousand" in a sentence and not only mean it, but also somehow make it sound believable.

Speaking of marathons, just had one for Jojo's bizzare adventure.

im not entirely sure whether certain things ("you're about to say 'correct horse battery staple'" "correct horse battery staple WOAHAUAGHHGH", the one black guy in the whole show that just appears for history exposition out of nowhere) are intended to make me laugh as hard as they do. But i dont even care. Nonstop cheese.

Jojo's an action comedy. You're supposed to laugh at the meta aspects.

Part 3 hasn't really grabbed me yet. We'll see.
