Oy, anime-people, Il Palazzo needs your help.
Recently I've been having problems watching fansubs: new relases are apparently detail-rich, with larger files than before. My old laptop is unable to handle their decoding fast enough to maintain the 24fps.
So here's the question: is it possible to tweak settings of my player(media pl. classic) or decoders(I'm using CCCP) to make them watchable? I'm ok with sacrificing quality for steady framerates.

are you looking them up on youtube or veoh? if not there is also get-anime and megavideo (megavideo limits nonmembers but seems to have videos that are otherwise copyrighted)

if your looking to see everything about an anime type in its title and then wiki onto google and it should come up and on the right it should show all the seasons and OVA's in order of being made....very useful

Have you tried Mplayer? That usually can play videos better than other players, it did wonders on my old < 1Ghz computer.

In general I always prefer to use videolan vlc media player, which has most if not all decoders built-in (it doesn't use the system's video codec driver thingies). Usually it's always better than the alternative (using media player or some other codec-driver-based player), in the rare cases that it doesn't is because the image appears garbled when skipping ahead.

Thank you. Apparently, Mplayer is made of win. Enabling the skipping of h.264 loop filter did the trick.

5.  Full Metal Panic (cuz Kaname is the hottest drawn anime girl - jeez im such a perv)
6.  Tenjho Tenge (sp?) (cuz its just cool to know a guy named BoomChiChi)
7.  Hellsing - the new remix
8.  about 15 whose names i cant remember ( dammit )
9.  Trinity Blood (cuz vamps are cool, but Crusniks are much cooler)
10.  Fullmetal Alchemist (yeah, i KNOW! sue me)
11.  Baccano - looks to be uber win
12.  Scrapped Princess (good original ideas, awesome story, fun characters but falls apart at the end - like most animes)
13.  Samurai Deeper Kyo (cuz Kyo would kill me if he wasn't on the list)
14.  The melancholy of Haruhi Suzamiya (yeah, I KNOW I KNOW!)
15.  And more Classics I cant think of the title too right now cuz i am dumb. (like the one with Spike and Einstine and Fey and Ed - By armok - why cant i think of the name of that damn show!)

Horror: Higurashi no naku koro ni. (First Season)
Psychological: .hack//sign, or Chaos;Head.
Action/Flashy: Karas.
Mecha: Gurren Lagann
Romance: School Days.
General: Fate/stay Night. (The Visual Novel is much better though.)

I've seen far too fucking much to even begin labeling them "best" or "worst".

One I'd recommend though that hasn't been mentioned yet and I've recently been reminded of is Great Teacher Onizuka. It's very good.

This is probably the most fucked up show out there. Seriously, it can heal you from ever wanting to watch anything violent again.

I've seen chobits, I found it... slightly annoying - specially all the fan service with zero payout at the end (and by payout I don't mean porn). Going into specifics would be a bit of a spoiler.
