There was the hardening thing, then there was focused regeneration when she specifically regenerated one eye (which didn't even seem necessary, what with the whole hardening thing). Displaying a new ability that happens to be perfect for thwarting whatever plan the heroes have come up with, as late as possible to give the illusion of potential success, is what I mean. It's a fair enough twist every once in a while, but we've had two examples in as many episodes. I could be wrong, but... eh. I agree that the scream was reasonably foreseeable. Although being able to move and even fight capably after un-Titaning could be another example.

It just feels kind of like we've moved from the protagonists having to deal with unexpected challenges to the universe deliberately shitting on their hopes.

Yeah, that was what I was trying to say.  I can't remember exactly which manga I've seen that in before, but it was at this point in the anime where I started to feel like the tone was "severely outdated" rather than "fresh."  It's way too soon to do this kind of arc.  It's like the beginning arcs of DBZ, which only worked because Gokuu had already been long-established as a character with a particular sort of reputation, and we'd seen him assembling his team--we knew exactly what their special talents all were.  This style of arc fits better in a story where Levi is the main character and then watches everything go to shit due to unanticipated circumstances, but we aren't in that sort of scenario.

The thing is that we're in a land of "physical characteristics" rather than "martial arts moves," so why should the female titan get:

Sprinting, calling other titans, intelligence, speed recovery, point regeneration, AND local hardening?

It's really that last one that gets to me.  I can see the speed/coordination + call for eating as her special power, and point regeneration/intelligence/speedy transformation recovery as all the result of practice.  But the last one makes me feel like she's sort of showing up the Armored Titan.  Elective local hardening is perceived as multiple skills up the tech tree from auto full-hardening for reasons of heavy armor == slow, so it looks like she gets to be both fast and strong--and at this point of the story, that just looks really, really cheap.  It seems like the author couldn't figure out how to use the skills she already had to get the results he wanted, which seems ridiculously sloppy given how tops her skillset is.

She does pull out abilities late, but that seemed to be because she was smart enough to "play dead" and lure people in to attack, as well as avoiding showing off abilities she didn't need to use.  Even the hardening is something you could sortof predict from the fact that she was able to harden her hands earlier.

The main drawback of the local hardening seems to be that it takes fast reactions and a lot of energy - afterall, Levi and Mikasa were able to basically take her apart and make her fail her mission, which is something you probably couldn't do to the Armored Titan.

The thing I liked about the arc was how it was clearly a struggle for the antagonist, though.  It wasn't that she suddenly started "fighting seriously" at some point (in the Bleach "Now I shall put my other hand on my sword" tradition), she was doing her utmost from the beginning, and was just forced to use emergency defensive techniques due to the skill of her opponents.  In particular she seemed to be weaker than the Eren-titan, and only won due to the fact that Eren's blind bloodlust caused him to effectively incapacitate himself.  It's kindof like she's the main character for this arc

Well did an anime swap with a friend of mine (They watch something I watched, I watch something they watched)

And thus I watched Eden of the East entirely in one sitting minus the movie.

While my friend showered it with glorious praise... I just don't really see it. I think he liked it for its power trip (Or rather... the person liked it because he would want to have 80 million dollars to spend as he pleases and buy malls and stuff).

It REALLY feels like an anime that was much better as a manga but given its rating on the source I used, I think it is just that "I" don't exactly see what is so special about it. It just seemed sort of blah, the relationship was bland, the characters were nothing special, the plotting was lackluster, and the premise was barely explored. The animation though was oddly high quality for an anime and the voice acting spot on, the art design was also well done.

It also had the laziest resolution to a storyline I've seen in an anime... Which wow, in a month's time I have seen the most disappointing and the laziest conclusion to a storyline.

Edit addition: I am being overly harsh on this mostly out of backlash for being overhyped this series as well as being somewhat "made" into watching it. Honestly the series is alright but it does feel like an extended intro. Since the anime feels like it honestly starts the second it ends.

Since I finished Hulu's current library of Dragonball episodes, I decided to hop on the bandwagon and watch some Attack on Titan. I just finished episode 7 and

dammit, you guys really were spoiling in the Happy Thread, weren't you, about the mecha thing? These things are actually some sort of organic mecha or something, aren't they?

At first I thought it was kind of weird that the protagonist died near the beginning of the show, but I figured he was secretly not actually the protagonist, and his death was meant to propel the rest to further greatness. Then the one titan starts beating up the other, and I notice he has Eren's hair. So now Eren has either turned into a titan or he is piloting one and for some reason they transform to look like their pilot.

So does that mean all of the titans are piloted, or just some of them, like the most intelligent ones? But why would intelligent beings do such things? Is this part of some really weird death cult that uses colossal biomechs to kill people? Are they part of some sort of post-human species that is trying to wipe out humanity without having to sully the environment with a nuclear bomb? If it turns out to be some sort of bullshit where they're actually trying to inspire humanity to greatness by presenting them with great adversity, I will be so pissed, you won't even believe it.

Also, I just want to say that I rather like Spuds, and if she gets killed off I'll likely be very depressed. They're all going to die, aren't they? They'll kill off everyone but the comic relief girl, then Mikasa, and then it will just be Armin, who finds a gun and blows his brains out, and that's when the show just ends.

There was another one in the same style, but it was all Smouldering Bedroom Eyes. It was either that, or bouquet crotch... a tough call, but the call had to be made.

And yeah, surprisingly, I could not find a single piece of Fanart for Mikasa at all. It's all Levi and Eren, with the occasional Erwin or Armin.
