I hear from many people that Monster is similar + better.  Haven't seen it myself, though, so I can't say anything concrete.

Monster is a pretty good anime so far.

Tenma is pretty badass in his own regards; especially considering his origins, he's taken several level-ups in badassery.

Ok, making a start on Death Note.  Haven't really watched anything like it before, but then again, the main reason I'm watching anime is for stuff that's different to what I'm used to.

Quick question - how good are the dubs?

The subs and dubs are both excellent, and I'd recommend either.

Really?  I've been pretty impressed by his intelligence, actually.  I mean, the obvious "stupid" thing he does is to make almost all of his victims die of a heart attack, making it obvious there's a killer behind it, but this is explained as he's intent not just on killing criminals but also letting smaller criminals know that someone out there is passing judgement.

I think what he's referring to is the way his egomaniacal god-complex interferes with obvious good judgment on more than one occasion.

Well, yeah, of course.  The power goes straight to his head almost immediately, and his arrogance becomes increasingly obvious.

But then again, you can be a genius and extremely arrogant and childish in terms of emotion at the same time.

What I'm saying is that those characteristics cause him to make unwise decisions.

It's been a while since I've last watched it, so I have difficulty bringing up specifics.

Yeah, I know what you mean.  He demonstrates a lot of forethought in some of his actions (such as his hiding of the Death Note and checking to see if people enter his room) while rashly jumping into others (such as killing the fake L and falling into the trap).  And the whole idea of styling himself as a god rather than trying to do good anonymously (perhaps with varied killing methods) could've been an unwise decision in the first place.

Light shows his inexperience alot in the first season, but is generally pretty smart. In the second season though he just plain stupid; there are no excuses for how stupid he is.

Ok, finished the first "phase" of the story (ie up to the bit where L dies).  Hmm... after that footwashing scene I suddenly find myself looking for other biblical references.  Ah well.

Up till now though, at least, Light Yagami's been acting pretty smart.  His plan for eliminating Rem, Wattari and L was pretty clever, and it took me quite a while (and sitting down and drawing a diagram) to work out what he was doing passing around the Death Notes.

Slightly odd how the storytelling style seems to change though... hmm.  I guess it needs to put some focus on Mello and Near now that they've taken on the antagonistic roles.
