The first season is great of Pokemon, my nostalgia tells me so.
My nostalgia tells me that digimon was better. ;3

In serious, I found the first season of pokemon to be pretty decent. It's just that they never stopped rehashing the same storyline after that.

Down to the Guest party member Girl of the week season getting their bike scorched by pikachu and getting forced to follow our intrepid hero?

Oh yes.

I think the problem was that every few years their target demographic switches to the next generation, so they have an excuse to do the same thing over and over.
Not that I would really know, I stopped watching around the Johto part.

It make sense though.

Look at Sentie series. They get to rehash the same shit every season. They can assume that large portion of their audience is gonna go onto something else.

i just want to know why pedophile Ash ketchum hasn't still been captured, or are they telling me he's been going around in less than a year through the entire world?
Come on! he's basically a never-aging pedophile, always going around with younger kids and electrical mouses.
Really, at least an older version of him would *spice* things up a bit, kind of making it ... a bit more serious.
*should look if there are fanfictions on that regards though*

Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.

It wouldnt though.

Ash is the age of the target demographic. By making Ash older, it would shift what the product and franchise is aimed at.

Its just happenstance that Pokemon games appeal well outside their target demographic, due to a combination of nostalgia and being solid fucking games.

It's pretty damn foolish to ignore the older Pokemon fans, though. Yes, some fans move on as they get older, and no, the target demographic shouldn't change, but ignoring periphery demographics is plain stupid. It's selling themselves short. And besides, what harm would some creative writing do? They don't have to have boatloads of continuity or anything like that, but they should care about the storytelling. Being targeted at kids doesn't mean the overall narrative doesn't matter, especially in a hero's journey tale like Pokemon.

Well if you want a more mature storyline, go read Pokemon Special.

Not convinced.  I got annoyed at it significantly before then for endless filler and the pointless meandering nature of the story.  And this was 10 year old me who was able to watch Yugioh without getting annoyed at the pacing.

Well if you want a more mature storyline, go read Pokemon Special.
Or something which isn't Pokemon.

I don't think I'd want a "mature" storyline with pokemon, though. I'd just want a sophisticated production for one.

There's little actually objective when it comes to judging art, but sophistication is one of them. Did they make pokemon's repetitive storyline because that's what they wanted to do, or because they lacked the skill and/or vision to do anything else? My guess in the latter, specifically with vision. And that is why it sucks. Not the fact it's a kid's show; there are lots of awesome kids shows. Not the fact it's a mass media merchandise driven show; there are lots of good shows like that too. But rather, they don't convince me that they care.

Define what a sophisticated would be in this case.

Edit: Well in that case it really does sound like you would want to read special. When it's described as mature I mean it's more in depth with pretty interesting plots and characters. It is darker than the show at points but not by too much.
