Watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. It counts close enough for anime right?
It definitely picks up steam the further in it goes so far, and the finale for Book 1 was suitably a step up in intensity.

My only real gripe with it so far is that some of the scenes (especially emotional ones) can feel a bit rushed, like you know the necessary silence seconds were cut out to try and fit more into each episode.
The mid season climax is great for book 2.

I just recently finished watching all of Avatar:TLA. Just in time too, because for those who dont know the creators/producers of Avatar have released a sequel. So far It's no Avatar, but it's been nice to watch. I expect it to go to great places.

Honestly the show is interesting. In that there seems to be an inverse. The normal episodes just keep getting better but the finales actually keep getting worse.

Mind you that isn't a bad thing. The Pay-off is weak but you bank soo much on just the episodes before the climax episodes that it actually would have been better then if it was weaker episodes and a greater climax.

Actually yeah the best Climax I can think of was the first book. It was epic in everyway.

I really enjoyed watching all of Avatar with my brother.  When Korra finishes I'm gonna watch that all with him too.

This was back in...2008 ;_;

I think it's a good thing that it's not Avatar. Its defiantly its own thing, and I gotta say the important fights have been /great/, and I dont even mind the diesel punk with the meks.

My major question, is what are they making room for?

Avatar: TLA spent 2 and quarter seasons training the Avatar, getting his bending entourage, and training done. But with Avatar: LoK, she pretty much already done element training and already has her bending entourage. They've also done a really fast job setting up all the cool toys the Equalist have to fight benders.

What do they have planned that requires so much space?

Nothing? They planned it for a very short run (12 episodes iirc) and then got cleared for 12 more. Who knows what they decided to stick in the second half.

When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I think it could be a "Outdated" plot. They give the new Avatar all the tools of the old one and still have him come up empty.

Thus requiring entirely new sets of skills, abilities, and resevoirs of will to succeed or showing that through hard work the classics can still work.

Or it could be a "Return to old" where it is about returning to the fundementals that made up the original Avatar.

There are so many ways you can take it.

"They planned it for a very short run (12 episodes iirc) and then got cleared for 12 more. Who knows what they decided to stick in the second half"

It could be that they have a whole story planned but they believe the success of the first show could have been a fluke. Thus they are doing it in small chunks rather then giving us the whole plot entirely.

Probably stuff that hasn't already been done in TLA. Who'd want to watch the same training routines and entourage-gaining yet again? Or animate it for that matter. The very fact that this lasted 2.5 seasons of Avatar: TLA as you state, is the very reason not to repeat it. There's only so many variations on 'training elemental powers' you can do before you start repeating yourself. Don't want to turn this into Pokemon or something.

Starting the new Avatar further along in the training let's them make it it's own story.

On Topic:
I recently purchased the Gantz anime box set. Based only on the first two episodes, I'd have to say that it's kind of mediocre.
The animation is fine, but the pacing is much too slow for my tastes. (Spending almost a whole minute running from a train that's going full speed?)
Also, I can only bear to watch subs, because the dubs hurt my ears, especially the tertiary characters.

Overall (just based on episodes 1 & 2) I'd say that the manga is superior.

Yes, the Gantz manga is much better. Not least because of all the mindfuckery that happens past the point where the anime diverged.

I would... Its a new Avatar with entirely new skillsets and personality.

I would love to see how this one does things differently. It easily could easily be a major theme of the new Avatar.

With entirely new characters and new training.

The best part about Avatar was that it felt like a journey. But the new Avatar seems to be all destination.

-----

ALSO FINALLY a episode of Prince of Tennis Fantasy filler I actually like.

Mostly this works because not only are they mocking the genuinly mockable parts of their show now... but they arn't randomly inserting tennis into it for the most part.

Now lets see if they can keep this up... I already seen the episode where there was a bear and instead of trying to lure it away their idea was to hurl tennis balls at it.

----

Also oddly enough... I think Prince of Tennis may be the only anime I can think of with a genuinly mentally handicapped character. I mean there are dumb characters but this is the only time I saw one who actually was mentally handicapped and not just comedically stupid.

It only sticks out in my mind because I sort of wonder to myself why I havn't seen it before now.

I doubt this would have ended well. "The same but different" tends to either skimp out on the different part or turn into Different For The Sake Of Different.

Then again, I haven't seen the new one, so I couldn't really say how it stacks up currently.

Probably the same reason you seldom see genuinely physically handicapped people- they're usually just not that interesting.

Physically handicapped people tend to be rather common. Though I understand what you mean.
