All long-running Animu's that are based on Mangos run into too much filler; Mangos take too long in comparison so invariably an Animu will catch up.

What makes a good Animu from a bad Animu is how the producers handle the filler; One Piece handles the filler supurbly, by taking throwaway side-stories only mentioned in the Mango and exploding them out to full mini-arcs, they've done this so well in fact that i had to have several of the filler arcs pointed out to me.

Bleach started off badly with the Bounto arc, which they tried to pretend was legit and canon and generally sucked big hairy gorilla bawls. They then seemed to leap onto a good thing with the Amagai arc, which came out of nowhere and was literally the producers going "Hay gies, sorry, it's time for some filler again. It's not canon, it's just filler, but hey, that's life." and it started off real good too, until Amagai ended up horrifically stereotyped into a bad guy and the arc was ruined.

The latest filler arc (The Soul Slayer\Zanpaktou (did i spell that right?)) looks pretty good, the art style has had a marked increase, it was starting to slide a bit at the end there but with the latest arc it shot right back up, for awhile, it seems to be slipping again which is a real pity, but so far it's an interesting story and again they've taken a "Hay gies, filler time!" approach, which works just fine.

We'll see if they manage to fuck it up like the Amagai arc though.

The key to making good filler is not to treat it too much like filler.

Good filler could just as easily be confused for the actual storyline.
-I wonder if it would be a good strategy to include true story elements into filler.

That is one of the reasons why Naruto Filler worked so well is because they expanded the storylines and abilities of the other characters you otherwise wouldn't know about. (but it still had soo much even that couldn't save it from "has the story started yet?")

Bleach doesn't need filler... it just needs to repeat what happened last episode for the first 10 minutes, talk about it for the next 10 minutes, and then continue with the story with the remaining 5. (ANGER!)

Also my favorite One Piece Fights are always with Uusop! Too bad I long since stopped watching it by the time Uusop actually started fighting. I just hope he doesn't go all Nanami later and get magical gadgets (He has one that counts in my mind... but he uses it once)

The Naruto filler worked well?

You are the only person i have heard say that. Some of the filler showed promise, but most of it was crap. And it went on forever, oh god, make it stop, make the memories stop!

Usopp's fighting style continues to revolve around trickery and deception, he also turned out to be immune to a certain power that makes one feel really sad and worthless (negative) because as it turns out, he's naturally negative anyway.

He does continue to ramp up his deceptions though and is definitely gaining more than a modicum of coolness to match the other crew members.

Personally i've always thought there are two kinds of good filler; there's the One Piece kind where they seamlessly merge the filler with the real storyline and avoid conflicting with any established canon by sticking to normally side-issues. This is the preferred method, but is extremely difficult without working at least a little with the author himself, as otherwise you can run into canon wars later on which are never fun. The second way is to have the filler be completely disjointed from the story; admit that it's filler and that it's entire purpose is to sit around and wait for the Mango to get enough material to do another episode and just run a good original story-arc. Don't tie it into the main storyline, don't try and pretend it's canon or that it even makes sense, just make it entertaining. The 'Boss Luffy' arcs from One Piece (i think that's what they were called) are an example of this, where they basically pop off to a completely different setting with all the characters roles and personalities getting mixed up and an entirely unrelated storyline for a few episodes; it's fun, it's entertaining and it means the writers get to do something of their own for a bit without risking potential shenanegins later on.

I don't watch Naruto (My station stopped showing it at a reasonable time) I was only going by what other people told me

Anyhow the reason why Uusop's fights are interesting is specifically because he doesn't have powers. It is interesting to see him take down characters many times stronger then he is without overpowering them like most of the other character do. Though he does tend to have miraculous endurance...

Nami doesn't have pwers but she practically has a magic staff... She also overpowers them.

Why are people still complaining about Bleach being bad? It's like complaining that fire is hot or that the sky is blue...

Having started watching the FMA anime, I've noticed that it seems to have... hmm... whatever the opposite of filler is, since it's finished while the manga hasn't.  And it is rather different to the manga plot.  Eh, maybe there's such thing as too much source material... :P.

Reminds me of Bokurano, where the anime ended before the manga, and was actually considered better in some aspects.

And then there is Rozen Maiden which went ahead of the manga, and thus why it ended.

FMA is a good show, one of the best shown in Canada.
As far as I remember, there has only been three good animes here; .hack//SIGN, FMA, and Death Note, all which were taken off rather quickly.
Right now all that is shown is Naruto and Bleach.

The annoying/funny thing is they took off Death Note right before the last episode, so many people never got to see the ending, and rage was had.

The only really successful anime here was Pokemon.

Pokemon was good for only the first season, and Digimon for the first two.
I never thought of them as animes though.

PS:Digimon>Pokemon

Yeah.

You have to admit, the first Pokemon opening gets you pumped.

Yes, it does.  I've always thought, however, that the epicness of the opening doesn't actually fit the show at all.  Ah well.

Yeah, the show tends to be laid back, except some battles are pretty cool.
I still have the first two-three episodes on VHS from years and years back, maybe I should watch them sometime.

Yeah, also the whole comedy villains aspect.  The whole "World we must defend" thing doesn't make much sense :P.
