A group of elven migrants, has decided to stay.
« on: December 08, 2008, 10:41:58 pm »

Does anyone know what "A group of elven migrants, The Curled Skins, has decided to stay." means?
I saw this strange message while my fresh, soon to be drunk  fort was barely getting its farm up, and I was busy dumping random animal fat into the lake.  When I heard about this I immediately suspected the pointed eared menace was up to no good.  I armed all of my pioneers with crossbows ready to fill the elves with a mixture of animal bones and wood when I saw... there were no elves :(.  I checked the unit list and sure enough, only dead rhesuses and a few ground hogs.  I know that elves attacked stealthed but would their immigrants?  I suspected the abandoned human town  but, I only settled in the western edge where there were only 2 hovels.  If i find these elves will they live peacefully? Will they come into my fort?  Would they eat my dwarves in their sleep (In the dwarves sleep, unless elves sleep eat ;D)?  Any answers would be appreciated, Thanks ;D.

Holy crap, did Toady find a way to update old copies of DF wirelessly or something?

My guess is it's some extremely obscure bug activating some placeholder code for multi-species forts Toady tried and forgot about.  But damn, I have no idea.  Keep us updated, this could be huge.

I can imagine where this might be going: Elvish ghettoes made out of wood (special Elven wood mind).

Actually, my guess would be that the announcement was about the elves settling in the human town, since you happened to be close enough for the event. I think I've heard of a few worldgen events continuing over the first year of play.

This seems like the most plausible explanation.  I think migrants might keep moving indefinitely during Fortress Mode play, not just for the first year.  If the migrant movement provides a base for some of the future army code, as Toady has indicated, it would make sense.

In any case, that's pretty cool.  Random elf migrants showing up and begging you for shelter would be fun.

Multi species fortresses would be cool. Too bad the ai never seems to do any work on their settlements.

I've got disappointing news...  I played this fort for almost another year and still no sign of "The curled skins".  I've sent several hunters scouts and still no elves.  I'm thinking of savescumming and sending in an adventurer.  Would these elves then move into my fort like when you abandon near a human town?  I really don't know what to do from here, so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks for posting ;D

I doubt anyone will be able to advise you further as the last two threads about this topic (in particular, regarding kobold migants and elven migrants) yielded nothing, and reached roughly the same conclusions as have already been presented in this thread. I think the only record on the forums of local creatures actually ever being connected to the announcement was when someone settled in a human town before the town was 'officially' occupied by the local humans.
