My first epic slaughter
« on: December 08, 2008, 04:41:35 pm »

So I mined into some warm stone, my miner stopped and I was alerted.  I thought, 'cool, a magma pipe'.  I was on the bottom level of the map, so I dug a stair up, then mined over the warm stone.  I was expecting lava...but I breached into the HFS!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ive been playing since 33g, but this was the first time I ever had my entire fort killed off by something OTHER than my own stupid engineering projects.  yay blood!  Losing IS fun...there needs to be MORE things that set fire to the whole map and burn 60+ dwarves alive!

Great story.
But I thought that demons are fire-proof?

I dunno.  He fell into the lava, and there was no way out for him.  He was flashing like was on fire, and then he was just a demon corpse sitting in the lava.

Just build a micro-fortress by using search and choose "other features"

Start with 7 miners, and mine away the bottom floor.

And you can't eat them, either, sadly. Even though it'd make sieges so much more fun; dwarves lining the walls, drooling and carrying sharp knives and forks, ready for the upcoming meals.

You should try and keep it going for as long as possible. Just keep reclaiming every time something horrible happens. Sounds like you've already made a good start on the "something horrible" part.  ;D

Yeah, I've seen the Pits once, and that was a 10 year old Succession game fort I was experimenting with.  Curiously, the exact same thing happened to me with the standard Pitlord falling into the magma right after spawning.  I suspect he actually spawned in the lava, because he's certainly not fireproof - there was a big cloud of smoke, and by the time I noticed it all that was left was a pile of !!XXdemon boneXX!!.

Thank you so much for giving me a new hobby. I will name this hobby of mine "Spontaneous HFS spelunking".

the first time has gone wonderfully. my 7 miners found the adamantine and subequently found the HFS right away, then tentacle demons poured out and killed everyone (including wardogs) in a very bloody display. While everyone is being slaughtered, the traumatized captured dwarves, humans, and elves march out of the HFS in a neat single file line, and throw themselve into the nearby lake outside. it was wonderful. (makes one wonder how the hell they got INTO the HFS to begin with...)

RECLAIM! so i set to reclaim with 70 dwarves, the mob rush easily overcomes the demon hordes within. the casaulties however, sends everyone into a massive tantrum spiral. the constant fighting leaves the landscaped marred and covered in a horrible display of blood, clothing, bolts, the bodies of the dead and dying, blood, dead dogs, stray bits of raw adamantine, and blood everywhere.

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

Oh, and i have a new favorite engraving because of this little adventure:

I couldn't find my HFS with two hands, a flashlight, and a sacrificial virgin. I have to cheat. Once I bumbled into a HFS without help... and I panicked so hard that I ended up accidentally flooding my entire fortress demons and all.

Yeah. Anticlimactic.

Well, I just did the "dig strait for it" method, and was quite impressed by the ridiculous speed of Fire Spirits.  I then came back with a few Adventurers and figured out that just standing next to one for two turns will kill you as all your clothing bursts into flames.

Yes...they are pretty deadly.  And they shoot fireballs that cripple dwarves and set them and nearby things on fire.

Anyhoo...Of the 42 reclaim dwarves, 36 survived the initial assault, with one paralyzed dwarf, and one blind dwarf.  The rest would have healed given time...except that they started tantruming and going berserk.  Then two more fire spirits popped up out of nowhere...I guess I missed em.  Of those 36, only one of them survived and guess what?  Her name is Urist!

So of course now I have to write the story of how one lone dwarf named Urist rebuilt a shattered fortress all by her lonesome.  hahaha

Heres the link...
