To this day I have never successfully found an underground river, chasm, bottomless pit, or lava pipe/pool.

It irks me.

I have, however, successfully begun my first underground farming operation.

Dude, use the search features and set special features to always be visible in the init.txt files.

I do use the search feature.

And I do believe I will. How do I do this thing?

On this subject i'd like to note that 3Dwarf visualizer can very handily show you where all the hidden features are if you don't mind cheating, otherwise it's a lot of guesswork.

On things that i'd wished i'd known sooner, pressing Num3 and Num 9 to quickscroll, / and * to quickscroll when youre using + and -, and holding shift to move quickly over the main map, someone should make a list of these and put it on the wiki

Go into the folder you have DF installed in, and open data/init and open up init.txt.  There are a lot of different options there, and Toady left notes explaining what they all do.  What you are looking for should look like this:

[SHOW_EMBARK_POOL:ALWAYS]
[SHOW_EMBARK_M_PIPE:ALWAYS]

Except that it will say NO instead of ALWAYS.  You will need to change it to ALWAYS to look for underground features manually.

It's even funnier if you know it, but you forget it panicking... i was rushing my underground mining operation, transfering water over a constructed bridge over a chasm and barely finished irrigation when the majority complained about being sober and starving... you think i wasted ONE thought about butchering the dogs, cats and especially cows in my fortress.... bleh... i am glad no one died.

anyway. i found out the hard way that just because it MAY rain in hot climates, i shouldn't expect it to happen... having my champions wear metal armor and weaponry was rather nice until they started sparring... with no water on the entire map. i dug out a reservoir leading to a dried out pool, sat on a stone looking at the sky and waited for rain. when the second dwarf died of dehyd i abandoned the place...

I strangely had little problems getting used to the game. i intensively read the wiki and tried a few tortresses... after 4-5 abandoned places i got the hang of it quite peachy

When selecting materials for a large construction, instead of hitting the enter key 81 times you can hit shift+enter to select all the materials of one type at one.

I didn't know about mass-forbidding/melting/dumping via the z-menu until i was already WAY into the game. gotta say, that made everything way less tedious.
