That even after several months on this forum, people will still assume that you're either a complete newb that doesn't know how to play (and thus give you stupidly simple advice that doesn't address the problem) or else a retarded old-timer with limitless resources of steel, magma, glass, and magma he doesn't have a clue how to use (and thus give you complicated and unworkable advice involving mass use of materials you don't have).

You know, digging ramps beneath trees actualy dosn't kill you! My lil brother did it alot (he was puting ramps all along the side of the river for some reason) and the dwarves were knocking trees into the river, but that didn't kill them. What killed them was when the current suddenly took up the resulting logs and bludgened the dwarves downstream to death! the freakin' coolest thing that ever happened

This is a lie.

Bridges that could be built with umkh.

I spent most of my early DF career building 'bridges' one tile at a time. And hooking them up to levers one at a time.

HORRIBLE.

It took me forever to figure out that farm plots worked this way, too. Designating every single tile to grow plump helmets every single season got really tedious after a while...

Farming, brewing, and cooking (forbid plump helmets from being cooked, brew them first then cook the wine) is the ONLY industry you need besides military.

Why make $1200 dwarf buck crafts when you can easily make $10k+ masterwork roasts?

I empty entire caravans of goods with food.

Its true, but what other kind of advice is there? This lace has helped me enough times. At least I always fall into the earlier catagory. And also, this is for Dwarf Fortress not the forums.

Add butchery, tanning, leather working and bonecrafting ( and crossbow making ) and that's my entire industry for booting up  ;) took me a few forts to finally figured out that I could actually make leather and bone armor, saved me some trouble trying to figure out how to protect my soldiers in more recent fortresses

What about ramps + trees necessarily kills dwarves?  On my last fort I wasn't paying attention when I was digging my moat out, and after channelling the top layer, I mined the second, without realizing there were trees that hadn't been cut down.. my dwarves got knocked out when the trees fell, and I think one got a yellow wound, but neither died.  Do ramps make a tree falling on you more deadly, or something?

THIS annoys me.

I've vowed to never sell food ever, just because of how unbalanced it is.

Stealing the armour right off the backs of the wagon guards. It's alright as long as you give them goods to cover the cost, right?

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Seconded. This never happened.

As for the selling food, I only do it to get an anvil in the first year. After that, I stop trading completely, and anything of less than masterwork quality I generate either gets melted back down, or dumped into the magma.

(Which is why I build almost everything out of obsidian, bauxite where I can afford to, metal, and wood.)

Though, I really ought to start talking the dwarves into bringing me metal... I'm usually in dire need of more, as I mine it all up and use it all... =/

How to trade. Or, more specifically, how to seize goods.

I didn't know about mass-forbidding/melting/dumping via the z-menu until i was already WAY into the game. gotta say, that made everything way less tedious.
Just learned that today aswell, yup.
It hides my workshops though >.>

Build your workshops out of blocks, not raw stone, and you can get around this.

I've vowed to never sell food ever, just because of how unbalanced it is.

The main problem with this is the value inflation that happens:

1 seed worth $1 - 1 to 5 plants worth $5 - 5 to 25 plant products worth $25

It's NOT so unreasonable for a Dwarven roast to be incredibly valuable, when made out of exotic ingredients, like Dwarven Cheese, Giant Cave Spider Meat, and similar.

But the insanely inflated value of plant-process products compared to the work/time that goes into them is a factor. Simply reduce extract value, and you're looking at much more reasonable food prices. And food that's worth a lot? It will be worth a lot for good reason.

quarry bushes are the 'sploit. 1 seed to 5 plants to 25 leaves to 75 meals. Mix in some sugar and flour, and you have yourself some kind of leaf cookie. Delicious.

But the thing I wished I knew earlier was that you can go up and down z levels with the >< keys. Makes you want to >.<

It wasn't actually explained anywhere. I ran a pretty okay fortress without changing zlevels, although I was confused about the lack of ground in some places. Oh well. I think it cramps my style even today. I don't plan to add a zlevel until later, so I have some pretty oddly configured forts.
