Sheer cliffs?
« on: December 08, 2008, 01:21:57 am »

I haven't played DF in a long time, and recently got the latest version and rolled up a map, picked a spot that had (according to the tab screen) some very steep elevation changes.

My dwarfs arrive at the location, and I'm left with a befuddled feeling. There are no sheer/completely vertical cliffs. EVERYTHING has a ramp. Some of my favorite forts where built into sheer/vertical cliffs, with ramparts overlooking the entrance, and the 'noble' rooms having 'windows' overlooking the entrance 5-6 stories up.

Has this been change? Is it no longer possible to get a sheer cliff going up several z-levels?

I know I can create a sheer cliff artificially, by collapsing the offending rock, but that doesn't appeal to me. I don't know why, it just seems 'cheap'. This probably sounds childish, but I want to start with a natural rock face, instead of a dwarfmade one.

Edit:

Here is the start I'm talking about. Sorry for the poor picture quality, photobucket shrunk it :(

Unless there is a water source or a chasm of some sort next to the cliff face, they will have ramps.

Otherwise, have to start at the top and channel your way down or just remove the ramps if a straight drop isn't that important.

It still happens but rarely, IIRC, cliff generation was much reduced due to pathfinding problems for carvans and civs building bridges off cliff edges going nowhere.

You might get steeper cliffs by messing around with world gen parameters.  Cliffs get "smoothed" by default so that civilizations can build roads more easily.  There's a couple parameters that relate to cliffs directly, but you can also try maxing out the elevation variance and maybe decreasing the mesh size.

Ah, OK. Thanks guys. Dwarfmade it is then.

I'll play around with some starts around rivers/streams and see what happens.

I'll look into messing with the world gen as well, but I'm just getting back into DF after an extended absence. I assume all the relevant info for that is in the wiki?

I'm really hoping cliffs make it back into a later version, I liked them too. IIRC it was 39 that first was like this, and I was pissed. Oh well.

IIRC, all versions since the 2D version are save-compatible. Gen your world in a pre-smoothing version and copy the results to your current save folder if you don't feel like tinkering with the worldgen parameters.

And I, for one, welcome our option to turn of that god damned periodical cliff erosion. Use it wisely, all the cool kids are doing it.

I think I may have had a map with a few sheer spot though I'm not sure I could find it again >.>
Anyway I can try to find it when I get back from school.

Earlier today I actualy managed to generate a world with a very nice site, and also has some really large sheer cliffs. And has plenty of good things to have fun with on it. Like 101 Z levels going up from the bottom. And the levels that are rock it are about 50-66% stone(marble mainly) until the very top. And now I have the problem of what to do with it. I figured you might like it, as it does have most things one could want.

World Gen info

How to find

Non-Mountian biome part.

Also of note is that the dwarf civ "The calm Citadel" doesnt have access to bauxite, which this site may not have a lot of.

Now I just need to figure out something spectacular to do with this very nice site.

That's extremely awesome. Build a city jutting out from the middle of the cliff.

Whats funny, is at the bottem there is a 2nd hill, that is close enough to the sheer cliff face that I could bridge up to the cliff, and dig in there, and right now thats all I can think of to do here at this fort, also give could just about give each dwarf/family an entire Z-level to themself. I really have no clue as to how to procceed with this site, as I do want it to turn out to be a very nice fort.

This site just screams for something epic to go with it. The question is what? Maybe a waterfall tower that goes all the way up from the ground level to the 101st +z-level? Try and recreate something like moria? Or some other crazy thing I have yet to think of...

Well, I know it is re-genable as I created it the first time on my laptop, and those images are from my pc. Did you just use the seed numbers? Best thing I have found is open the init file, and copy all the generation paramaters into the world gen text in the init folder. Should be able to change the title to something else as well, if you want.

Though if you set up the paramaters similar to what I used, should get other interesting sites like this one.

Though I do wonder if I was to change the history seed if I could find one with pre-existing wars?
