Tallow overload
« on: December 08, 2008, 12:16:06 am »

I have 360 cow tallow.  What should I do with this?

Food seems dumb: I also have several hundred cow meat of course, along with nearly a thousand meals.  So, soap is the only other option, right?

Cook the meat and tallows into meals, naturally! It'll keep them from wearing away and make more compact stacks. Though you could try for soapmaking if you have sand and wood to spare.

Simple: Build large stockpile with entrance. Move all your other food except the tallow into that stockpile. Seal entrance. Now, once all the tallow is gone, open up the stockpile.

There! Your tallow problem is solved!

TettyNullus: please read the second paragraph of the OP.

BurnedToast: just a road seems boring.  However, it's a slippery slope from talking about roads to talking about a big ramp made of soap.  Maybe with a couple bends for extra fun.  Hmmm...  By the time the kids mature and my working population finally grows, I will probably have enough tallow for a truly insane slide park.

Axe27: tallow is inedible until lovingly roasted over an obsidian block hearth.

Never hurts to have more food, I've ran low on prepared meal often enough, and well, you can trade them meals away, assuming you have trade partners, those makes for decent trade goods if you can trade it away quickly enough. Needs less infrastructure than soap, but the choice's yer  ;)

The fire imp fat boiled instantly, which I'd never seen before (I've butchered fire imps, and made fire imp tallow, maybe on a cold map?). I can't tame the alligators, which makes it hard to breed them, though I may try later.  Kittens and dogs aren't as fancy as cow.  So that's the best I can do.

TuttyNullus: ok, I see what you're thinking.  But I'm playing on Roth num.  No caravans.  Also, my population is currently 13, growing at about two per year.  I have several years of food, and to make matters worse, it keeps breeding almost as fast as I can butcher, which is much faster than my dwarves can eat.

lock them up in cages, they won't breed that way, and you can store like... almost infinite amount of the critter, though you might want to make a small room with blocked door for 'em to stay inside and breed, die and live without wandering out if you don't want to lose the entire stock from forgetting them in the cages (At least that's what I does, I have similar problem too many animals, ended up just sticking them into a few rooms and selectively slaughtering them)

I basically did that, but occasionally I'd miss a calf that my breeding pair had popped out, because I was floppy.  Then at some point I noticed I had about a hundred cows wandering around. Years go pretty fast when you've got a half-dozen or a dozen dwarves.

 Aboveground castle. Made of soap.

Enemies assaulting you that die in the castle will be easy to clean off the walls.

Remember: No merchants. So the only way to give it to others is to impale enemies with it.

Idea: Create a ceiling over the entrance. Crush your enemies in soap. Wash yourself in their death.
