Dragging?
« on: December 07, 2008, 08:08:14 pm »

Just an idea.It would probably work with wrestling, being able to drag your opponent around, but i guess it would also help if your allies jump into a pool of water. You'd be able to drag them out, slowing down there inevitable deaths.

 Creatures dragging their prey?
Traps dragging their victims towards them?
Guards dragging lawbreakers to their cells?

 I approve.

Nice, I like it.  I bet it could use the existing code that dwarves use to lead animals around.  Except if the person's being dragged around unwillingly, they should probably be prone.

maybe it'd be best to also set up a resistance type setting where depending on the strength of the dragee and the dragger the person being dragged could have a chance to escape the clutches of the dragger, if done right this could also possibly fix the bug with wooden cages holding megabeasts.

other than that it's a pretty good idea

Perhaps dragging could be used for items as well, such as dwarves dragging a door instead of carrying it.
Multiple dwarves could work together to drag heavier objects/more unwilling creatures.

An object or person that is being dragged or 'steerable' could be pushed as well.  So dwarves can help push a dragged bin down the hall, or a single dwarf could push a bin on wheels (wheelbarrow) or prod a cow into it's corral.

The same system could then be applied to wagons and the like.  And carp.  Carp should drag dwarves.

a single dwarf drags an unlimited creature cage up the stairs of the cave, 20 dwarfs swarm a kitten looking to drag it into a cage, even better the kitten escapes and drags five dwarfs off the side of a cliff.

I don't know, it seems like an easy way to make a hilarious bug.

still it would make it rather realistic.

Carp do in fact drag land creatures into the water.  It's not just dwarves jumping in like idiots.

I think dragging in fortress mode is a little unnecessary, except perhaps in the case of a swimmer rescuing a non-swimmer, or a dwarf on the bank dragging out a drowning dwarf standing near the water's edge.  Dragging doors and other objects around that they already carry effortlessly.. I fail to see the benefit.  If you don't want to picture them hefting a giant stone door on their shoulder, imagine them dragging it.  If Toady required 4 dwarves to drag every stone door from a stockpile to its construction site, everyone would just complain.  Some dwarf would cancel because of lizards or because he was thirsty or wanted to take a nap and the others would just wait for him to come back.  Not to mention you'd suddenly need an army of haulers for the simplest tasks.

Dragging in adventure mode seems great, though.  I shouldn't be able to pick up an entire bin and stuff it in my backback to carry around a few thousand miles before I throw it at a minotaur.  Maybe quests could be implemented where you need to drag a person - perhaps a runaway slave, a fugitive from justice, or even a wounded person who needs rescuing from a goblin tower.

In a related note, pack animals could drag plows for faster farming, or wagons for hauling large amounts of heavy materials about.  Imagine setting up a quarry on your map outside your fortress, because you want bauxite or obsidian or something not where you started digging, and instead of having that army of haulers carry stones back one by one, they drag it to a nearby wagon and then the beasts pull the wagon back to the fort once it's full.

Eventually that part of the game will be fixed hopefully, so cages -for example- will have a storage capacity. Also, the max. amount of weight what an entity can lift up / carry around should be also coded in as soon as possible. Perhaps the caravan arc will bring us these goodies.  ;)
..as for the topic, it's a simple and good idea, I like it.  :)

There should also be a [ROUGHNESS:x] tag for stone. It should decide how much damage is done by dragging your foe above it.

It should also damage if it's semi-hot, like sand.

And you can't eat them, either, sadly. Even though it'd make sieges so much more fun; dwarves lining the walls, drooling and carrying sharp knives and forks, ready for the upcoming meals.

Dragging already occurs in my fortresses during tantrum spirals.

I've had a dwarf dragged out of his office, up three flights of stairs, then brutally murdered.
[edit]
I have not seen dwarves being dragged, I usually see a blood trail after the fact. I'm sure that it could be dwarves trying to run away while being grappled. So I could be wrong about there not being dragging, but I like to believe that there is.

yeah but that's just dwarfs killing each other by grappling, what we are talking about is actually taking some creature by a body part and dragging them while prone a distance, either into a trap, or straight into a cage.
