Minor suggestions thread
« on: December 26, 2007, 08:04:00 pm »

This is the thread to add all those suggestions that are to small to deserve their own thread or you do not really believe in.

I encourage you all to make these suggestions here instead of spaming the forum,  I also encourage you to make it a separate thread later if should it balloon to big, I ALSO encourage you not to discus any of the suggestions to much as this thread is not meant to discus a specific suggestion, Toady is exempt from this rule and is greatly encouraged to comment all suggestions (but not extensively discus any of them individualy).

I just almost made one of those in its own undeserved thread, thats why I'm making this thread now, I'm to lazy to rewrite it so here it is:
////////////////////////////////////////////// Original post:
title: "Make smooth- and engrave stone separate in the labor preferences"

"
^
|
really minor nitpicky suggestion that don't really deserve its own thread but I couldn't find a good place to stuff it.

Another solution to the same problem would be to set the minimum skill level for engraving in the orders menu, I don't know which one is the easier for Toady.

...

This brings up the question if smoothing any amount of walls would actually make you an better artist, if that is going to change this suggestion bight not be wort implementing as it would only help exploiting a placeholder bug."
////////////////////////////////////////
I have a lot of these but for some strange reason I could only remember this on currently, expect more.

The whole point of this thread is that no suggestion is to small, for example now I suddenly remembered another:
"please use a slightly different phrasing in adventurer mode attacks so that a wider variety of attack names is viable while modding: specifically replace 'XXX XXX You in the XXX (from XXX) with XXX!' whit..." ehrm... I still don't remember what exactly it was he should replace it whit, but you get my point.
really some things that qualify better to being methods for fixing specific bugs might do.

a 'b'uild 'C'onstruction 'c'eiling building, instead of having to build floors, and then destroying the ramps/stairs up to them.

Ability to quickly place floors and walls over large spaces, perhaps using the exact same interface as (paved) roads.

I very much want this. Also make a list or something to pick which types of stone or materials are exempted from wall or floor making. This would help to keep me from have to not build walls out of Aluminum by manually moving down the list.

Okay, repeats then:

1) Wood boards intstead of blocks. Simple enough, eh?

2) Change leather to to skin, pelt or hide. That way, you have some ambiguous names for clothing items: Bear pelt pants, cow hide helm, and so on.

3) Dwarves will change clothes to suit climate. Leather, silk and plants have a specific heat and natural temperature. Your little guys should find any available clothes with higher specific heat so they don't freeze to death or die of heatstroke.

Set a priority rating for stockpiles.  Stockpiles with higher prority will be filled first.

Unhappy dwarves should work slower or be more eager to take breaks/attend parties. Assuming they don't already do that, that is.

Soil-layer challenges:
- Water seepage: Rain or being near water, occasionally you get some flooding into your fort. Maybe a lot.
- Dwarf-made soil stairs unreliable. Will turn into ramps quickly? May not even be designated?
- Every now and then a soil wall might "collapse" and fill an adjacent empty space with soil. Building in soil means you will have to do more maintenance and clearing.
- Nutrients for farming. Each square has a 'nutrient' level, and when a crop grows there it decreases that amount in order to grow. So you can 'farm out' a patch of land and have to either fertilize, move the plot elsewhere, or wait for it to recover. Different squares have different starting nutrient levels, and different 'set points'. Mud farming the most repeatable/reliable.

Other stuff?
- Surface-level flooding.
- Emigration.
- Besides caravans, more travelers and itinerants. Wandering musicians and philosophers. Maybe rolled into emigration: you might get a legendary gem cutter in your first immigration wave, but if he does not get enough happy thoughts in a set amount of time, he will emigrate. Below some certain threshold of skill they will not think of leaving. In the personality screen it might say "so-and-so is here to stay" or "is thinking of other places" etc.

The spacebar is too useful a key. I'm too comfortable pressing it. Please make it a little harder to completely ignore the liason by requiring us to press the Enter key or something else. I've blown off that liason one time to many, and unlike merchants, there's no second chance- at least right away.

clay. A workshop(s) for making clay items or ceramics, clay pots to fill the same role as bags which always seem to be in short supply. Ceramics allow for tiles.

Oh and paint, have the dyes to cover non fabric objects, like the stone and wood furniture, as a further room bonus when painted engraved or smooth walls and as an upgrade for constructed walls

You should be able to "reinforce" a soil square with stone blocks or wood blocks/boards, of course. And sand should do this a lot more than other soils, and clay-types less than others.

A way to search for a certain dwarf by entering his/her name?

Maybe if you press "s" while in the fortress view, you are prompted for a name?

Sounds like digging it out and re-walling with stone/wood!  ;)

"So-and-so has made a masterpiece!"

Great, WTF ARE they (profession)?  What kind of masterpiece?  Do I care?  If it's a bed, statue, chest, or cabinet, sure.  Not if it's a bag, mechanism, or barrel.

Pause when a dwarf reaches Professional in a weapon/wrestling skill so that I don't have to carefully watch all of my guards.  "Tekkud has become a professional hammerdwarf!"

Pause when a military dwarf suffers a spine, neck, or brain injury.  Again, so I don't have to watch so carefully.  "Tekkud has suffered a permanent injury and will never spar again!"
