Is it Possible To Survive Off Of...
« on: December 07, 2008, 06:48:05 pm »

Ok, I have a plan for a fortress, but its location brings up a few questions:

1. Is it at all possible for a fortress to survive purely on rainwater while on a glacier with no magma or brook/river/water source? (or will it mean anyone with a slight bruise is doomed to die of sobriety/dehydration?)

2. If I make an 'ice tower' in winter, depending on the world's maximum/minimum temperature settings, when Summer rolls around, would that melt the tower, cause countless dwarves to fall to their deaths and flood the fortress

3. What is the minimum temperature in which dwarves can survive? What is the maximum?

4. Same question, but for cats

...I get the feeling this is going to be the most ill-fated fortress since 7 dwarves set a wagon down in elephant-infested territory and said..."lets call this Koganusán"

Thanks to anyone who can provide an answer

1. Rainwater only refills "murky pools" which are special terrain areas that tend to show up in swamps.  If you don't have those, you won't be collecting any rainwater.

1.  If you have multiple layers of ice, you could collapse them to get water (you need 3, if I recall correctly; the trick requires you to leave the top layer as a roof, which makes the rest underground, causing it to melt after it collapses)

2. It doesn't matter what they're made of: constructed walls will stay built no matter the temperature.  You could even have a constructed wall of ice holding back magma (as counter-intuitive as that sounds).

3,4. Not sure, you'd have to ask a modder what the [HOMEOTHERM:10067] and [LAYERING:50] tags mean (I think those are the ones that deal with temperature).

about the temperature...idk for sure but perhaps i can help.

lower the number on the cats a few thousand, and they will die. or raise it a few thousand.

Or raise it to 40000:
