A history of DF
« on: December 07, 2008, 06:20:41 pm »

Is there one? Like, someone should make a timeline with notes about what happened when, in terms of development and the emergence of memes like Boatmurdered. Is there any such thing? If not, somebody who's been around since day one should make it.

As it is, I'm not even sure when the first version came out or anything like that.

In the beginning, there was nothing but a dream. This dream manifested itself in the mind of a young man, who was filled with a holy vision. With a terrible fury he crafted Armok, and it was good. But not all was good, for Armok could not encompass the whole world.
Thus the One Toad began on Dwarf Fortress. In the beginning, there was nothing. Then with the pressing of the enter bar, lands were formed and oceans flowed. Rivers snaked and forests grew. Life started, built cities, expanded and were good. From one such civilization came a group of 7 dwarves, some food, an anvil, and the will to entertain us with their madness.
This was known as the Striking of the Earth. It shall forever be known as a sacred holiday to the One Toad's chosen civilization.

 Eer, yea.
And note early devlogs were rather, well, bland. Not the paragraphs of insight on what the heck is going on like now.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Well yeah, since DF wasn't public in those years, it wasn't needed to release detailed informations / update.
Btw, just a funny thing!

I recall the time of DF's First Release, within a week b12 went from ~50 to ~200. Now behold for the flow of new members couldn't be stopped and DF won many awards as well(within a 6 months of the release, I think). But if you want to know about what happened before the First Release I can tell you about that as well.

Woohoo! I'm member #4272! I can't believe how many people joined since me, I haven't even been here a whole year yet, and I'm only one-thousand people or so after the half-point.
I'd like to see a members vs. time population curve graph.

Yeah, the game is well known now. It looks like that at least 200-300 people are registering on the forum / month.  8)

There's a hundred or so page thread around somewhere from before the first release. That's pretty much it.

#3470 here.
And erm, it'd still be a line graph...
y=x2 is considered a line graph...
It's called a parabola, but I'll be damned if it isn't a line graph.
But yes, a Member # graph would be cool.

I'm curious as to where you fellows are finding these numbers and statistics and soforth. I'm also keen on finding out just where I fit on the hierarchy of DF fandom.

When I first read "line graph" I thought of line graph since I've been seeing so many of them lately...  Needless to say I was very confused.

But yes, a graph of membership would be nice.

Let me rephrase that. I meant a graph of the forum's population curve, much like the world's J curve.
