One thing is worse, though - the Almanac. I can never figure out just how much food I'm producing and how much the people are eating.

This game is fun.

But very hard. And now I'm in the habit of assassinating anyone who is about to beat me in election.
Man, I should have played Tropico before now, this game is sweet.

In T1, political assasinations tend to backfire by making people hate you (and thereby giving your opponent more votes).

T1: Paradise Island introduces the concept of fear: When people realize that they could be killed if they go against El Presidente, they end up voting for El Presidente, and thus you can barely win the election. People will still hate you though.

Does this same thing happen in T3? Or is a new mechanic at work?

From what I can tell, people just hate you and turn into rebels. I'm playing the "unlimited demo" version, however, so I don't know if retail is any better. The game is fun, but bankruptcy sucks ass and seems really hard to avoid.

From what I can tell people don't get any scared of you for assassinating people, even if you assassinate pretty much the entire population.
It's not really that bad being bankrupt, and you can avoid it for the most part.
Also, unfortunately if you assassinate an entire faction, a new leader will appear out of the detractors, which makes no sense.  :-[

Yeah, it is annoying. I wish people were afraid of you because it'd be easier to manage with the style I play... >: )

Ill say that the kill all the opponents works VERY well in T1 plus the expansion, sad to see it's kinda gone now though.

At one point, somebody in T1 was able to eliminate the Capitalist faction entirely by killing ANYBODY who even had a shread of sympathy towards Capitalism. He did it at the begining of the game, so as to reduce the amount of killing he had to do (and thus reduce the amount of hatred that would occur as a result). Even then, I believe the Capitalist Faction still had a leader, it's just that a leader that has been dead for quite some time.

The North Korean strategy I was trying to do for my LP of Tropico was partially based on the idea of killing anybody who opposed the regime, but it failed on account of me not building any police station to deal with the military I'm so heavily reliant on killing.

The Paradise Island's Fear mechanic, by the way, only works for elections (as it should, it provides a benieft for actually killing your opponent). There are other ways of losing office, you know. And if you really had any trouble with elections, you should have picked the "Bought the Election" trait, and thus be able to more easily commit election fraud. Without the trait, you can sway 20% of the vote. With Bought the Election, you can sway 30% of the vote, meaning that you'll only need to have the support of 21% of the population in order to win democratic elections.

EDIT: Rakonas: Killing faction leaders always leads to the faction choosing a new leader. However, in T1, killing a competent faction leader leads to a new faction leader who may be more cowardly, have less leadership skill, and might like El Presidente more.

One interesting thing in T1 is that you could easily make factions love you if you just pamper their Faction Leaders with bribes, houses, and lovely jobs.

lol... killing an entire faction??  Not everything is solved with violence guys... XD

Killing not only makes the faction's supportes hate you but his family and all the people who watch it on the street.

If you want to suppress capitalists make a lot of socialist propaganda and give them one or two satisfactions, for christ sake! :P

This is the way to go and it's much more realistic.  It's how corrupt goverments deal with corrupt guild leaders.  For example, Argentina.

Military members must have decent housing and good money too.

No, you don't make more Socialist propaganda. You'll just increase the number of Socialists in Tropico, which means you have to please the Socialists more (they are more powerful, hence they'll make more demands), meaning that more Socialists will be upset at your rule. Rather counterproductive. :P

I was just pointing out that spreading Socialist propaganda does not make Socialists love you. It just increases their power, and increases their demands.

You want people to love you? Two things:
1) Actually run an effective government.
2) Pass tax cuts during election time. (Or, go the cheap route and bribe the Faction Leaders during election time.)

or do both to make it a landslide. ;)

Anyway... That tax cutting is a cheap tactic... There should be some kind of memory within the citizens so that you can't make that single crap move every single time and get the same benefits.

The game democracy had a "skepticism" bar or something that grew when you failed to deliver promises or pulled that kind of stunts.  In the long run The benefits of those promises was reduced.

Then again... there's so many people that have no memory and believe the same lies again and again and again...  ::)

Wait, you mean that there are solutions to appease the environmentalists that don't result in mass assassination and/or large deficits?
